CONFESS!!! You really dug "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks

I thought that was the greatest song every created!

Goodbye, Michelle, my little one,
You gave me love and helped me find the sun,
And every time that I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground;
Goodbye, Michelle, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air,
Whiff of flowers ev'rywhere,
I wish that we could both be there!

1. It was originally supposed to be recorded by the Beach Boys
but they decided against it, so Terry Jacks sang it himself.

17. Actually the Beach Boys did record it
...but I don't blame for not releasing it. Hardly a shining moment for them.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzjIra9pheU

Now on the other hand, Nirvana's version is pure genius, because they obviously weren't taking it seriously.....

40. Except that's not Blink 182
It's Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. They're a punk cover band. Not the first time something was mislabeled on YouTube.

Here's another one of their great covers....

..you might recognize it from a recent Micro$oft Bing ad.

so this is an old error, it's even in the Wikipedia entry for the song.

50. Napster & WinMX were horrible for mislabeled downloads.
Hell, there's even a few YouTube clips out there that credit the following performance to The Beatles.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzbjEXBcIYU

The Beatles weren't even a band when that song was recorded in 1973, and none of them ever joined the Stones (unless you count Billy Preston)

52. How else would you get an MP3 in 2000?
None of the "legal" services existed yet. Hell, I downloaded lots of stuff myself. Amazingly enough, I did it all on a dial up connection. Of course I didn't bother with anything I could actually buy in a record store, because MP3 files are never equal in sound quality, whether you pay for them or not.

Lars Ulrich and Rahm's brother Ari might judge you for downloading, but I never would.

I didn't really get into listening to popular music until the early 70s. Then it was Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, Kraftwerk's Autobahn, Blue Oyster Cult and Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

How about the staying power of "Lucky Man" ? :)

53. It was "translated" by Rod McKuen, sung by Terry Jacks.
It was originally written and recorded in French by Jacques Brel as "Le Moribund." Brel's was a funny song that teased his best friend and told him to look after his wife whom he had been cheating with anyway. Rod McKuen rewrote it without the humor. McKuen and Jacks did that to another Brel song, "Ne me Qitte Pas," which they called "If you go away."

41. Although I like the imagery in "Midnight at the Oasis"
it's not a favorite tune.

Midnight at the oasis
Send your camel to bed
Shadows paintin' our faces
Traces of romance in our heads
Heaven's holdin' a half-moon
Shinin' just for us
Let's slip off to a sand dune, real soon
And kick up a little dust
Come on, Cactus is our friend
He'll point out the way
Come on, till the evenin' ends
Till the evenin' ends
You don't have to answer
There's no need to speak
I'll be your belly dancer, prancer
And you can be my sheik

I know your Daddy's a sultan
A nomad known to all
With fifty girls to attend him, they all send him
Jump at his beck and call
But you won't need no harem, honey
When I'm by your side
And you won't need no camel, no no
When I take you for a ride
Come on, Cactus is our friend
He'll point out the way
Come on, till the evenin' ends
Till the evenin' ends
Midnight at the oasis
Send your camel to bed
Got shadows paintin' our faces
And traces of romance in our heads

54. When I was ten my best friend used to sing that song to me. Then, you guessed it....
he died.

We used to both sing it. His father managed the Flamingo Motel in Biloxi, Mississippi (which amazingly survived Camille and Katrina). We used to sing that song while playing in the swimming pool.

His father was studying mortuary science at a trade school while doing this, and I lost track of Sidney for a couple of months as they moved back to Bay St. Louis. Then one night Sidney was walking home in the Kiln, hometown of Brett Faver, btw, and was hit by a car driven by a relative of his. He was walking facing the traffic, and the car went to pass another car, and hit Sidney, killing him instantly.

His father had just taken a job managing a new funeral parlor. His first funeral was his son's. I swear to god, you can't make that up.

I loved that song until that day. I still can cry if I hear it without expecting it.
