1. Thunderclap Newman - Something in the Air

Jimmy McCulloch is 15 years old, playing guitar in this video (his brother Jack is on drums) - Jimmy later played for Wings; alas, he died at age 26 thirty years ago this month.

they had quite a few other hits in the UK.

93. Not really a one-hit wonder
Like Status Quo, which someone else mentioned, Big Country charted many times in the UK

All of these songs reached the top 40 on the British charts:

In A Big Country
Fields of Fire
Chance
Wonderland
East of Eden
Where The Rose Is Sown
Look Away
One Great Thing
The Teacher
King of Emotion
Peace In Our Time
Republican Party Reptile
Alone
Ships (Where Were You)

Four albums reached the British top ten, and three more made the top 50.

I was just about to crash but some of that 50s-60s magic is calling now because of you. Here are a couple more- let me know if they weren't really one hit wonders:

Plus, jet-dude, you really know your shit musically, and if I recall, you're not a geezer like me who grew up with this stuff, so if anything, your appreciation for the old rock-o-billy and 60's stuff makes you infinitely hipper than me ( OK, a little hipper---nah, I'm a fuckin' dork; a lot hipper it is).

75. I just love that golden age rock-n-roll stuff and am constantly
discovering (or rediscovering) great songs from that era. It seemed to be all about fun except for the doo-wop songs that can tear at your heart. A real treat for me is watching clips of the kids dancing in the 50s-early 60s. That really looked like a lot of fun. Rock-n-roll dancing was a lost art by the time I started going to shows.

BUT---here's more... Next Plane to London -Rose Garden, Wonderful Summer-Robin Ward, Angel Baby, Rosie and The Originals, Martian Hop-Randells, If You Wanna Be Happy-Jimmy Soul, Midnight Mary-Joey Powers, Concrete and Clay-Eddie Rambeau ( Unit 4 plus 2 had a hit version too, but in Chi-Town it was Rambeau's), Morning Girl-Neon Philharmonic,New York's a Lonely Town-The Tradewinds Bobby's Girl -Marcie Blaine, and I think this was the only chart hit by Sonny Charles--Black Pearl, one of the most gorgeous songs in the history of the planet.I've wanted to learn that one to do as a tribute to Michelle Obama,( and actually have wanted to do that one for years anyway) but always have wondered if it were proper for a white guy to sing, even though I was dating a black girl at the time it was on the charts ( who by the way, also grew upon the south side, not far from where Michelle Robinson did)and felt the same sentiments about her as Sonny Charles sings about.... I left off some songs that are considered one hit wonders by some , because they had followups that at least dented the lower echelons of the top forty...Expressway to Your Heart -the Soul Survivors ( immortalized in Steely Dan's Hey 19), (Explosion), Too Much to Dream -The Electric Prunes ( Get Me to the World on Time),Bread and Butter-The Newbeats ( Run Baby Run), Pushin Too Hard -The Seeds with the late great Sky Saxon (Can't Seem to Make You Mine), Lies-The Knickerbockers ( One Track Mind)...There'll be a test on this material at the end of the semester...Edit: how the hell did I forget 96 Tears???!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSmvdh5gpbg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQdqfLi1kn8 The guy playing harmonica goes by the DU name of abq e streeter. I was showing my old high school buddy and his wife around New Mexico a couple of weeks ago and some friends were playing on the Taos Plaza that night, and they got me up to play a little on this song.

106. The only one I know for sure had other hits was Ronnie Hawkins with Mary Lou
BTW, 40 Days is actually just Chuck Berry's 30 Days...a great song either way though. ( And I assume you do know who The Hawks became) I see another poster ( Mitchum) knew a lot more about Mickey and Sylvia than I did. I know my 50's music somewhat, but am FAR from an expert ; I know a lot more about the 60's stuff, but there are lots of people that know a hell of a lot more than I do... I always am discovering obscure old soul songs for instance, on you tube, that I'd never heard of, and there are people there who have dozens and even hundreds of songs I didn't know on their you tube sites. Like I've said, a lot of my knowledge is just from being in my late 50's now ( what ??? ...how the HELL did THAT happen???) and having been a total rock and roll junkie as a kid ( I used to go through batteries faster than Limbaugh goes through oxycontin, from falling asleep with the transistor radio on under my pillow every night). So, much of what I know is stuff I remember from all but having those transistor radios surgically attached to my ears 24/7 ( and then having gone back and researched stuff just cuz I found it interesting to tie bits of knowledge together). also... glad you liked the video my friend shot in Taos; like I said it was just impromptu sitting in on that one song. Hell of a guitar player isn't he . That's one of my best friends, Chris Dracup. And the guy playing spoons is a great singer and songwriter-Tommy Elskes. Lyle Lovett is apparently recording ( or already has) one of Tommy's songs for his new album ...oops, I mean CD , or whatever you kids call em these days... ... I've never posted anything else of me playing that's on you tube ( there are only a few things anyway) and of course as you know, only recently learned how to post you tube links anyway....You and one other person here are the only people I've pointed toward videos of me playing; the other person being a woman here who is also very knowledgeable about music, especially blues...Hopefully though, someday I'll figure out how to post some audio of me singing in a pretty decent rockabilly band from about 9 years ago that I have on CD, onto youtube and I'll send she and you PM's as to where to find it there if either of you are interested.....P.S. just tried to post Mary Lou, but been having trouble with you tube all day, and someone else on DU said they have too, but check it out when youtube gets itself fixed, although I suspect you probably already know that song...(?)

Edited on Thu Sep-10-09 12:04 AM by abq e streeter
also, being Cleveland bands, I should have guessed a connection between The Outsiders and The Choir ( another great one hit wonder: It's Cold Outside; gotta see if it's on you tube). and here it be:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndBjoitqR8k

who arranged the horns on Help Me Girl? ( one of my favorite horn breaks in all of rock and/or roll) didn't look this up, BTW... I still have my 45 of it, and remember stuff like this instead of information that I can actually put to practical use....

53. This is a blast! Would that be Tommy Baker...
Who went on to do the orchestral arrangement for Grand Funk Railroad's I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home?

My most favorite Grand Funk tune by the way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8MYsii4DZY

(Although I think they ripped off that intro guitar lick from the Monkees' Pleasant Valley Sunday :) )

55. Cooler still!
Never saw Chuck's name in the research I did. Tommy Baker was listed as "horns and string arrangements".

Amazing all the intertwining when you start digging.

65. Well, technically The Dead were a one hit wonder.....
they only had one top 40's hit, "Touch of Gray"

but short of them, I would have to say either

Steeler's Wheel: Stuck In The Middle With You
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8StG4fFWHqg&feature=PlayList&p=00ABF09FCEC403FA&index=37

or

Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem: Can You Picture That
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxMmn750P64

it may be from a children's movie, but I'm 29, and this song and its lyrics are still revealing themselves to me, and affecting me in positive ways I could never really express here.
