n a shocking afternoon announcement on Wednesday (Sept. 9), Fox revealed that Ellen DeGeneres has joined "American Idol" as the popular talent show's permanent fourth judge. DeGeneres will join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi on the judging panel following the audition rounds, replacing long-time "American Idol" regular Paula Abdul, who abruptly departed the show this summer. "I could not be more excited to have Ellen join the 'American Idol' family," said creator and executive producer Simon Fuller. "Ellen has been a fan of the show for many years, and her love of music and understanding of the American... »

3. I *LOVE* Ellen, but I think this might be the jump the shark moment for American Idol.

(Though in my opinion, the very concept of the show was a shark jumping moment - what a fucking pukehole of garbage of idiocy that show is)

Although with Ellen on the show, and that insipid fuckwit and ignorant stain Paula gone, the show might be watchable now. At least, if one turns off the volume while the "singers" are "performing".

5. What is her professional music knowledge/qualifications?

As annoying as I found Paula at least she has some musical creds. I like seeing musicians/industry experts hired to judge musicians....

10. I like Ellen a lot but this is a horrible choice.
Multiple reasons:

Ellen is nice. People like Ellen. I don't think even Fred Phelps could hate Ellen, she is just so damn likeable. So, you make her a judge and one of two things happens:

a. Because she is so nice, Ellen continues on with Paula's "You're all winners" schtick and doesn't offer any hard criticism, except unlike Paula, Ellen appears to be sober so you don't at least get the train wreck value from it.....OR....

b. Ellen has to change her attitude and give tough criticism to contestants, hence becoming less nice and thus less likeable.

Not to mention that Ellen has absolutely no connection to the music industry. She's a comedian.
