I have two friends who use "prolly" instead of "probably"
in chat and text.I keep trying to get over it,but it still drives me nuts. The worst part of all that? They're both middle aged.

1. Well, if they were teens I would say that...
its prolly jus a faze their goin thru.

But since they are adults - they should pick up a grammar book.

2. grates on my nerves, too
preggers, bugs me, hubby, bugs me, and a few more that I can't think of right now. I'm not with out sin. My friends and I went through a baby talking stage and I had a friend who wasn't in with the same crowd asked me to knock it off. We all went around saying 'otay', 'you are not the boss of me', and 'I am so too the boss of you', why we thought is was so cute escapes me.

6. It bespeaks a childish and unrefined demeanor, in my opinion.
But then, some accuse of me being too draconian in matters of protocol and social decorum.

12. It's easier
Spelling out entire words through texting takes forever and it hurts my fingers. I don't know if it's any easier on a pocket PC type of phone because I never been able to afford one but on a regular cell phone it's much easier to just type, u, txt, luv, ppl, etc.

16. Me, personally I don't think it's a big deal
Some may say your friend needs to pick up a grammar book but I have a feeling your friend can fill out forms, reports, etc with correct spelling and punctuation. It's really just chatting and if others can understand what the person is saying then it's purpose is fulfilled. I haven't been in a chat room in years but I typed in a similar way, there is also a limit in how many characters you can send through. But when it comes to e-mail and messages board I type the best I can but I know I make many errors.

18. That's another thing about one of my friends i mentioned..
she takes pride in spelling out tough words like psychiatrist and pneumonia but say's "prolly". I just find it very unsettling.

17. I have a friend approaching 40 who uses "prolly" too.
He also writes about eating a "sammich" and "punkin pie." This isn't text or IM, but email. :banghead:

19. context/cirumstances make a difference
I tend to drop capitals and use some of those kinds of shortcuts on the tubes, myself. I prolly should be more careful.:P

20. What's wrong with shorthand?
Especially in mediums like chat and texting, where short-hand is useful. I use "gonna", "wanna", "gotta" all the time.
