According to Clive James, whose "Cultural Amnesia" I'm currently reading, despite his own bourgeois origins Flaubert regarded the bourgeoisie as the enemy of art, and "went to great lengths to keep his art uncorrupted by the allegedly sentimental expectations of the bourgeoisie."
The only Flaubert I've read is "Madame Bovary". It seemed to me a tale dripping with melodrama, but told with clinical detachment.
