1. The thing is is that Jimi preceded Stevie Ray with experimenting on e.guitar,
so it is impossible to know where SRV would have been without that precedent. I prefer Jimi as a songwriter, though. SRVs lyrics are too "80s coke-head deep" and not enough "LSD ride a dragonfly's back deep", which I prefer. But SRV does Jimi's instrumentals better than Jimi did. I'm so confused!

But SRV does Jimi's instrumentals better than Jimi did. "this statement does not compute"

5. Yep. The 'Little Wing' Paradox.
Jimi's 'Little Wing' is a pale imitation of SRV's, even though SRV's was recorded many years after Jimi's demise.

2. "Better"...that's a loaded word.
You have to consider that there was no Jimi Hendrix for a young Jimi Hendrix to listen to as he was growing up and learning how to play.

Stevie had that.

Plus, he had the advantage of superior technology.

It's a wonder that Hendrix played even remotely in tune considering the state of the '60s whammy bar/spring assembly on Strats.
SRV also had stage monitors when he performed live.

I doubt Hendrix could hear his band or his vocals half the time.

4. You are right.
I said elsewhere that it comes down to people seeing Jimi and saying "I have never seen this before." and people seeing Stevie and saying "I have only seen this once before." Both are consummate performers and extraordinary musicians, nonetheless.

Love the info about tuning and monitors, thank you.

On another note: I have been moving away from Miles and really digging Mingus lately.

9. Not better. Different.
Difference between Hendrix and the overwhelming majority of guitar players who preceded him:

Guitarists usually say "I must learn to play this instrument."

Jimi said "This mess of wood and wires needs to learn how to become my voice."

That's the kind of player Stevie Ray was too, but comparisons beyond that really aren't fair.

MILES wanted to play with Jimi. MILES! Can you imagine what the hell THAT would have sounded like?

Despite the constant regurgitation of studio outtakes and concert tapes, let's not forget that in his lifetime, Jimi only officially released FOUR albums in his lifetime: Are You Experienced, Axis Bold As Love, Electric Ladyland, and Band of Gypsys.

Maybe some of the stuff that ended up on the posthumous albums would have NEVER seen the light of day if Jimi had a deciding vote.

So the only conclusion we can draw about Jimi is that he died too damn young, with God only knows how much music still in him.

:toast:
