R.I.P. Larry Gelbart
http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/09/11/obit.larry.gelbart/index.html

CNN) -- Writer and producer Larry Gelbart, most known for his work on the hit television series "M*A*S*H," died Friday morning in his Beverly Hills, California, home, his wife said. He was 81.

Gelbart died of cancer, Pat Gelbart said. The family will hold a private memorial service.

Throughout his career, Gelbart developed a portfolio of more than 40 works spanning radio, television, theater and film. His fascination with radio as a child inspired him and influenced his evolving career.

"I never had any aspirations of literary career, but writing for radio seemed to be a natural extension of being such a radio fan," Gelbart told CNN in 1999. "So when I got my chance, that's what I did."

2. So sad--we're losing so many of the great, good ones.
M*A*S*H is rerun here almost daily, so I still think of all those guys, Gelbart included, as young and active. It's sad to think of them getting old. I'm always so shocked when I see Alan Alda these days--in my mind, he's always "Hawkeye" to me.

4. I loved his wife's comment about his illness.
when she was asked what kind of cancer he had she answered "the lethal kind". Wry and pithy, they sounded like a perfect couple.

RIP Mr. Gelbart.

5. LOL. Nice one.
I'm glad that, on a day when a man who made me laugh so much has died, I can laugh out loud within minutes of hearing the news.

RIP Larry.

8. When I read it in the paper I couldn't suppress a "bwah".
A friend asked me "what's so funny?". I told him Larry Gelbart died. Silence and narrowing of the eyes were his only response.

:hi:
