7. What is it about that turd that chicks dig?
I mean, it seems that without females who follow NASCAR, Tony Douchenozzle wouldn't have any fans.

And you can't spell 'SUCK' without USC.

10. Damn if I know
Must be the 5 o'clock shadow.

I'm normally an SEC (read Auburn) fan. I just have a soft spot in
my heart for the PAC 10. I rejoiced when UCLA kicked the shit out of
Tennessee.

Honest to Goodyear, I'm gettin' some tired of NASCAR bashing by people: A)Who should know better, but the Eurosnobbery overcomes 'em
B)Who know beans about racing, but figure they should bash anything they perceive as "Southern" C)Jeer anything they don't understand

16. So why is F1 superior?
Is it the lack of passing? The lower number of possible winners? the $20000 steering wheels? "Team Orders"? Traction control?

Hate? Boring? Who the hell are you?

And the fans... a sot like you otta fit right in...

22. Juan Pablo Montoya, when asked by David Letterman, put it well...
Dave; "What's the difference between driving an F1 car and driving a NASCAR?"

JPM; "Have you ever driven a pickup truck and a Ferrari?"

Montoya, BTW, currently drives in NASCAR and has driven both Formula One and Indy Car. He has wins in all three series as well as winning the 24 hours of Daytona and was the 1998 Formula 3000 Champion.

There is simply no comparison between F1 and NASCAR. None. The differences are well beyond the difference between a pickup and a Ferrari, more like the difference between an F-16 Fighter and a crop duster. It is an engineering exercise as much as a racing series. You could just about field a mid level NASCAR team for what Scuderia Ferrari spends on brakes per season.

If you think there are no "Team orders" in NASCAR, you would be mistaken.

And this is nothing but cool;

And this is...well...what it is;

This isn't a NASCAR bashing post, either. It is what it is. I've worked in NASCAR racing and I've worked in Indy car. I might just have a little bit of knowledge.

23. All depends on what you like to watch, I 'spose
I like passing, and close competition throughout the field. I want to see the drama played out in front of me, where I can smell it.

26. It depends on what you want to watch
NASCAR is just like watching people drive on the freeway. Passing on the freeway is easy and becomes trite. The competition is only close because full course cautions repackage everyone.

F1 is like a curving mountain road. Passing is difficult creating drama. There is a bunch of close competition as F1 carts try to pass each other. Two carts side-by-side at 150 mph heading into turn.

24. Compare fasstest to slowest qualifying times in each
Yeah they are much heavier cars. So the tire area to weight is way down which makes them handle poorly. On the other hand even on a road course the qualifying times between first and last are preatty tight compared to what F1 turns out. Does F1 have the equivalent of a Robby Gordon who has a reasonable chance of posting a victory during a season despite the enormous funding differnce between such a team and a Rousch or Hendrick?

25. Qualifying times are closer than you might think
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 10:01 AM by A HERETIC I AM
Keeping in mind the fact that an F1 grid is 20 cars and a Sprint Cup field is 40 + cars;

Qualifying times for the 2009 Sonoma race 2.166 seconds separating fastest from slowest.

Qualifying times for the 2009 British GP 1.551 seconds separating fastest from slowest.

As far as your second question, the dominant team this year is Brawn GP in their first season. When was the last time a team in their first year in NASCAR's premier series lead the points race at this point in the season?

The "close" racing in Sprint Cup is, in my opinion, a bit of an illusion. If one were to take the average 500 mile race and stretch it out into a point to point race (Chicago to Lincoln, NE. for instance), thus eliminating full course yellow flags that bring the last place car back to within striking distance of 1st place repeatedly, you would find rather dramatic spreads in finishing times. Yellow flags penalize the leader even if the incident that caused it happened behind him. This is one of the main reasons F1 resisted the use of full course yellows and the Safety Car for so long. Of course they are necessary on a closed circuit for safety reasons but they do serve another designed purpose: To keep the field close together.

As I said above though, there really isn't any proper comparison between the two series. They are as different as apples and oranges.

Edited for sentence structure

18. NASCAR is just stuck with 80's technology
Whereas F1 is the pinnacle of racing technology. The fastest cars with the best drivers on the best tracks.

20. I would beg to differ.
Nascar is assuredly NOT "stuck with 80's technology".
They have deliberately limited themselves, with few notable exceptions, to '50's technology and to economically feisable materials.

And the level of technology involved has little to do with the level of competition, in any racing series.
