Like a virgin is like the only song of madonna's that I like.
I just don't know why she is so popular. Maybe it is just me.

1. Madonna is the Queen of Pop
When she hit MTV back in the 80s a lot of young women wanted to be like her and a lot of young men wanted to boink her. It might be one of those "you had to be there" sort of things.

4. She's an imitator and popularizer, and I admit I like a lot of her stuff
I think my main criticism of Madonna is that she is very uncreative. She's never created a new genre or sound.

But in a weird way, she's very sympathetic to subcultures and picks them up and popularizes them often in a very user friendly way.

Also, her videos dramatize these genres in a very literal way, making the subculture comprehensible to Joe Public.

I loved Vogue (which popularized voguing and the Uptown culture of gay fashion shows and balls eg Paris is Burning) and Ray of Light (which popularized trance music).

I also like her ballad "Take a Bow." She definitely isn't creative, or consistent, but she's good at what she does.

5. not a fan, but respect her ability to reinvent her image periodically to remain somewhat relevant.
it's still just mindless pop music.

6. She shows her traffic cone-shaped parts.
I liked "Like a Prayer"; she hit her stride in 1989... but the videos show a different meaning to the lyrics. She's good, but she is overrated. More about being shock-jock...

7. I enjoyed her first album for summer poppy goodness. It was fun
then it got to much airplay and I got sick on all the sugar.

I really did like Holiday.

Later on, I liked Crazy For You and Like a Prayer. Vogue was kind of fun, too.

8. That's one of my least favorite Madonna songs
My favorite Madonna songs are "Like A Prayer", "Hung Up", "Rain", "Express Yourself", and "Ray of Light." Madonna is great. She's not my favorite singer but definitely in the top 5.

11. It isn't her songs but the whole package - the dancing and videos, etc.
You also have to love pop music to love her too.

12. it ain't just you, charles, the chick can't sing
i'm old and you know what? even in the 80s she couldn't sing

she was famous for being a tireless quote unquote self-promoter by which i assume she gave head to the right people

there are bazillions of better looking girls w. better bodies who can sing and dance and trust me MOST of us who were "there" are just as mystified as you are

just as in corporate life, the CEO who makes the most money isn't usually anything but a self-promoter who knew who to suck off...so with madonna

you have not missed or misunderstood ANYTHING

NO ONE deep in their soul knows why she is so popular because she has nothing to offer that's anything special, there's a prettier girl with more talent on every street corner and even back in the 1980s there was a prettier girl with more talent on every street corner....

it ain't just you, never doubt yourself for daring to have good taste

14. She's just boring- "oh, I'm so sexy and powerful." What a stupid schtick
she set women musicians back about 30 years. Now all the young women think they have to dress and act like porn stars to make it big.

I can't stand her. Can you tell?

15. The only one that impresses me is "Material Girl"
I like "pop" music, and that one fits the bill.

The rest of them I can take or leave.
Emphasis on LEAVE.
