4. Now days it's just a fraternal organization |
|
The masons originally came together a very long time ago as sort of a guild. It was a way of preserving their craft and what they had learned about it. Now days the organization has a sort of religious feel to it. There is a myth associated with it that you can read about at your local library. All of the freemason's "secrets" are in print. Manly P. Hall, who was a high ranking freemason, is the best author to read if you want to know all about the freemasons.

7. I have an old copy of "Duncan's Ritual of Free Masonry" - interesting book. |
|
It was controversial, breaking the vow of secrecy and all.
My favorite part is the ritual for handling one who aspires to become a the Grand Mason. Specifically, it involves blindfolding him and hitting him over the head with a five pound setting maul "kept for that purpose" and then, presuming he is dead, staging a burial and planting an acacia over it. It is all completely scripted. If I can locate the book, I'll post that section some day.

22. 300? There's documentation of them from the 1300's |
|
Of course, back then they were an actual masonry organization. It's thought that the "free" in Freemason was to differentiate the independent stonemasons from the serfs and indentured stonemasons who did much of the work in medieval times. They were the elite masons of their day.
Nowadays, I suspect that most Masons wouldn't know how to lay a brick on a bet.

And they really aren't that secret - you can find copies of most of the rituals on the net. Just look for the conspiracy sites with christian leanings
Most of the meetings are spent doing ritual - which is actually pretty impressive. The first thing most new Masons notice is how these rituals, which are passed word of mouth, are spoken so eloquently.
It's too bad the rituals are secret - they are fun to watch!

No wait, that's three words, oh, they tricked me! But they're there! In their costumes and doing their silly walks! If it'll be a real secret society, nobody (except the totally secret members of the totally secret society) would know about it.
