How do you say goodbye to someone you cannot stand?
We had a going away party at work for someone I didn't get along with very well. I wish that I had had the courage to say something. Of course I wasn't going to be mean or anything. Things like:

"So and So is a real leader. People will follow him anywhere. Out of morbid curiosity."
Or
"I've learned a lot from so and so. Mostly what NOT to do." (This is true by the way. He once burned up a boat motor and left us stranded for hours. Ended up getting back to the office at 2 am after being rescued by coworkers). Mostly, though, my stories about this person involve me being pissed off at him so I couldn't really tell them.

I won't miss him but I am not welcoming the extra work this now means for me.

1. I never say anything in those situations - I just stuff my face with as many cupcakes,
beers, nachos, etc, that I can get my hands on. I figure that clearing off the snack table is my owed recompense for dealing with an idiot...

6. Don't say anything.
Last summer the biggest pain in the ass at my work retired. Even though hardly anybody liked him we had a nice little party with cake and punch and everybody shook his hand and wished him a happy retirement. Nobody said anything mean or snarky (to him), and it was a happy occasion for everybody. He was glad to go and we were glad to see him leave.

12. I don't like making religious statements like that in the workplace, though.

10. A simple nod or tip of the hat should do the trick.
I had a chicken hawk supervisor who rode my ass all the time and when came by my cubicle to say good by before he left for another job I was luckily on a call, I just nodded at him and pretended to be more involved in my work.

11. Say "Begone, wretch," and make some cryptic gesture with your cloak.
They'll get the point. Maybe not now, but soon enough, when all of their goats are stricken lame.

Then bust out in your best happy feet dance.

16. Easy, just say good bye
don't add anything about it being a pleasure to work with the person or how you will miss them. Sometimes what is not said can be more powerful and effective than what is said.

23. Have a second party the day AFTER.
When they fired the fuck up of the year, and the abuser of women I said nothing. I said not one word, in spite of the fact that I personally have made it my mission in life to live long enough to take a huge hairy shit on that idiot's grave. Instead, I took in several bottles of sparkling juice and a few dozen donuts the day AFTER he was gone.

The HR Administrator gave me one of those "head shakes" that indicate bad taste, but I did notice she ate a couple donuts and drank a couple of cups of juice.
