2. actually there is a difference between the nursing instinct

of a baby (which we are born with) and the mothering instinct to give suckle. Some individual animals don't know how/don't want to nurse their offspring. Ask any dog or cat breeder. They will tell you about how they either have to assist or hand feed because of that.
