Can you spare some of your famous Lounge Vibes for Chaucer kitty?

We took him to the emergency vet last night when we found he was vomiting blood tinged fluid. He was also running a fever. He spent the night with the ER vet on an IV full of antibiotics. So far his x-rays are normal, his blood counts look fine, and he's not positive for FEL or FIV. He stopped vomiting once we took him into the ER. They submitted a blood sample to the U of Illinois Vet labs for testing because they suspect some kind of blood parasite. They said his platelets were clumping on the slides they prepped and they think they found some black spots in his red blood cells.

We transferred him from the ER vet to his regular vet this morning, and they have all been talking to both the U of I lab and the ER vet. We should hear something later today, however, his vet says he is still running a temperature and the blood test results are a key thing in determining how they proceed with his treatment.


Please, we love our kitty Chaucer an awful lot. Can you guys send him some Lounge Love?

16. A update on Chaucer...

His fever dropped yesterday, and he was well enough to take a chunk out of the vet's arm. He got really annoyed with them for "messing" with him and he actually drew blood on his vet. I was mortified, but she was actually kinda gleeful about it because to her it was a sign he was getting better. He is getting antibiotics and other support drugs to help him while he's regaining strength.

The blood test came back negative for any abnormality in his blood. No parasites, and (more important, in my mind) no cells that would indicate a systemic cancer.

So, what we have is a cat that was vomiting blood and running a fever who did not swallow anything that shows up with radiography, has no organ abnormalities that they can see, and has no abnormalities in his blood. He's negative for FLV and kitty AIDS.

Any suggestions?

Sorry, I couldn't find any popup-free sites, but google cat salmonella and you should find information pretty readily. Anyway, sounds most like some kind of food poisoning, but more importantly, it sounds like Chaucer's getting lots better.:)

26. Davsand, the name "Chaucer" in the subject line caught my eye!! I knew it was you!

I'm sending lots of vibes! How is he now? The U of I saved my Moses' life, well, extended it. They saw him through a crisis, and then Tom Updike at the Paxton Vet Clinic helped him live another year. He had hyperthyroidism. I don't know where you go, vet-wise, but I'd swear by the Paxton Clinic.

But, I digress. Vibes are being sent. Please take care of the cat with the coolest name I know! I hope it's easily treatable. :hug:

It sounds like you have the experts working on this. I'm hoping it's just a mysterious, self-limiting condition. Sometimes you never know what was wrong but the patient recovers.

29. Second Update on Chaucer--Please keep those vibes coming!

His fever is down again today (after going back up again yesterday!) and he's still refusing food. They are running more blood tests today to try and figure out exactly what is wrong. The vet is talking about "fever of unknown origin" as a possible diagnosis, but I have to admit that just seems like a real cop out to me. The cat has had a fever, and he threw up blood--that would seem to me to indicate a PROBLEM--ya know?

I stopped in the vet clinic this morning and took him some shrimp and some lox (two treats reserved for special occasions that he usually gobbles down) and he turned his nose up at them. He was clearly happy to see me and he gave me quite the hard time for leaving him. It about broke my heart, but he has GOT to eat before he can come home to us. If the fishy stuff doesn't work they are talking about force feeding later today. (The vet is healing nicely from her earlier run in with him, I might add...)

Thanks to you all for your support for Chaucer and for us. It helps--a lot! I'll keep updating as I have news.
