1. "It's not always about you." |
|
This should be Life Rule #1.
As an illustration, my celebrity brush story:
It was the 1990s in Berkeley, CA, and I was enjoying a beer at a bar frequented by newly-minted celebrities Green Day. Specifically, and notably, poor Billy Joe, who suffered the most. The local punks were busily accusing him of selling out for taking money to make pop-punk, and he was noticeably on edge about the whole thing, having just signed to a major record label.
An older gent (which in those days meant he was probably 40 at best) was having a heated discussion at the bar with the bartender about Billy Joel, who had just performed some benefit concert or other across the bridge in the big city. The gent was merrily and boisterously spouting off on Mr. Joel, "Billy Joel's a no-talent hack" and "I can't believe anyone wanted to pay money to see Billy Joel" and so forth.
Unbeknownst to our "older" gent, but well-noted by everyone else in the bar including the poor bartender enduring the Billy Joel hate-a-thon, none other than Green Day's Billy Joe was just a table away. Fuming. Quite certain his integrity was being called into question yet again, but today at his favorite bar, and at great volume.
Finally, the young star stood up and walked over. Tapping the gent on his shoulder, he said, loudly enough for the entire bar to hear him, "Do you have something you want to say to me?"
The gent turned to the blue-haired young man and stared quizzically.
"No," he said. "Who the fuck are you supposed to be?"
The entire bar erupted in laughter. Billy Joe slunk away.
Moral: see Life Rule #1.

3. Maybe it's just my Asperger's talking, I don't get why people take things so personally. |
|
My God, I give honest constructive criticism, trying to be helpful, and it's taken as a personal slight. I don't get it. Is the average Neurotypical's ego THAT fragile?

16. It depends, are you tactful about it? |
|
There's a difference between:
"Jesus, there's way too much fucking salt in this. Yuck."
and
"I think you got too much salt in this."
The first one will naturally put anyone in a defensive posture. Taking offense to the second just means you're thin-skinned.

7. That's a good one, and I can see Billie Joe |
|
getting all worked up. I like him, but he has a huge ego. At the recent Green Day concert in LA he related how he was outside of a club in LA talking on the phone to his wife and some guy driving by spotted him, pulled over, and started hurling insults. Instead of ignoring the guy Billie began engaging him in an escalating "FU" verbal tussle - utterly pointless, but he felt his honor was at stake or something. He's also been known to jump into the pit at a show and start using his fists - considering he's all of 5'7"' and slight, not necessarily a smart move.
Still, he puts on a good show.
