Why did I spend my time watching "District 9"?
May I please have my hour and a half back?

23. Oh, I know.
I just can't tell if he's kidding or not, since I can't think of anything to cause that option to be carried out on little ol' me ;)

Now "500 Days of Summer", that wasn't worth the time.

4. I have your hour and a half. It's in India, which is exactly 90 minutes off Yekaterinaberg time.
But for some odd reason, Nepal is set to be 15 minutes off of Indian time, including the part of India that is east of Bangladesh, but still set to the national time zone, and therefore you go ahead one half hour by crossing the border into Bangladesh from India, whether you're approaching from the east or the west, as can be seen here. Obviously, in these circumstances, you can certainly get your lost 90 minutes back, but the effort and stress of doing so will probably take two years off your lifespan.

(PS, "District 9" is an anti-apartheid metaphor. Disliking this movie probably means you're an arch segregationist.)

6. Crap. You've outsourced my hour and a half.
And I get that it's an anti-aparthied/prejudice metaphor. How could anyone not? Even those hated by the whites hated the aliens. They hammered it in for far too long. The redemption of the catastrophic loser at the center of the story did not impress either. The number of true science-fiction cop outs demeans and frustrates...waste of time, even as a lover of science-fiction and as a strong voice for equality.

9. I simply felt, among other things,
Edited on Tue Sep-22-09 02:34 PM by Fire Walk With Me
that the utter lack of appearance by the superpowers was ridiculous. America alone would have sent hundreds of gunships and air tugs to tow their ship to the US. There were many other items such as this that bothered me enough to not get to enjoy it..glad that you are able to get past the initial hindrances which bug me too much to ignore..I need to loosen up...

14. How exactly were the alien weapons and battle exoskeleton transported to the ground?
It appears that humans did all of the caretaking regarding the alien crew; even if the aliens did some of it (explaining the craft seen at the end), then why were painstaking sweeps not done from day one? No way the powers that be would allow anything of the sort, with such advantage to be had (and such danger to be deflected). Many things about this film just don't add up. Why, if the one alien and its son could fix the ship, wouldn't they hang around to get the rest of the crew on board? Certainly those who don't like them in the first place, would bend over backward to assist any mass exodus. I do get that they just wanted to get away as far and fast as possible, especially considering how the humans treated them, but still..

12. I thought exactly the same thing and posted it here:

Just my opinion, but some people don't like you to have an opinion when it isn't the popular one. I, too, wished I had the time back but since I didn't pay to see it I didn't lose any money.

16. Good thread. I read half of it when it was new. Should have taken it to heart.
"I bet you 99% of Americans will not get the message of this movie."

And that says so much about most Americans...?

I'm rather a different person. Intense, weird, and non-linear. I've taken crap all my life for being different, so I get the prejudice and dehumanization (which is also clear in the propaganda leading into many major wars..."They aren't aren't like us! They aren't even human!"), and detest it in any of its incarnations. It's soooo clear in the film, I wondered if Oliver Stone was involved. And good point about it being turned into a video game at the end. I liked what the reviewer said about that.

Point of interest: Did it indeed drop in profit in the second week?

17. I got the message, but it had been sold to me as an action movie, not a message movie.
It didn't drop as much as I thought, but I don't see it as a movie people want to see over and over.

Here is the box office results:

18. I enjoy message movies, "Emelie" being one of my favorites
but it had truly excellent everything to make the message wonderful. District 9 hits home, but didn't make me want to see it again.

On the other hand, I recently re-watched "Koyaanisquatsi" and was, as always, blow away. That is another successful message movie. It doesn't hit like a hammer.

28. I cannot (times three) get past the lack of US interference and theft of their craft, at minimum.
The entire world, sitting around doing nothing, to help or to help themselves (to alien tech)? It is simply incredibly far-fetched.
