Stung...in the fucking face.....by a fucking wasp.......hurts

Working at my former bosses house today, I was up on a ladder scrubbing the porch slats and ceiling- I actually saw the fucker coming at me so I hurried down the ladder and did make it to the bottom but he still got me...fucking little bastard. Turns out, there is a nest being made inside one of the windows in a room in the back ( where I'm working now ) and that's where the thing was heading..guess I was in the way....

You see a wasp heading your way that looks like it has a destination in mind....fucking move

what I didn't mention was that my boss picked up this spray that not only kills the bastards on contact but kills anything they come into contact with....even that nest they were building. If I see them tomorrow ( yep, still gotta work ) they are frigging doomed

In my newspaper today was an article about the way to keep wasps away. Small ziplock bags filled with water, set around here and there. Seriously. Supposedly, the refracted light rays disturb them.

12. My neighbor used the "plastic water bag" method

at his last backyard crawfish boil to keep the flies away. He hung five or six away from the picnic tables and I'll be damned if it didn't work really well. Supposedly they're attracted to the moisture that sweats from the bags.

A bumble bee got me over the left eye when I was 8. The swelling was really bad. The area around my eye ended up the size of a baseball. When my aunt stopped by for a visit that evening, she took one look at me, shrieked and then gave me $5. Beyond the swelling, it didn't cause any serious damage.
This last summer a wasp or hornet of some kind accosted me while I was at the top of a 20ft. ladder. He attacked so relentlessly I had no time to descend the ladder, so I had to swat like a madman until I finally hit him and he flew away.

16. This spray I have now will knock them down "on contact" it is deadly stuff

you don't want pets around it or other people or stuff they drink out of...I'm fairly confident I can get the job done tomorrow with no hassle but if there is a hassle, I'm gonna have fun with some target practice!! :evilgrin:

21. That happened to me when I was a kid, too.

I was stung on the temple one evening, which led to my eye swelling up something horrible. The next morning my mom was alarmed and was going to take me to the doctor. Unfortunately, we went out to pull the laundry off the line first, and another wasp flew down and stung me at mid-forehead, right at my hairline. At that point, I'd had enough, so I went back to bed and didn't leave the house for at least 24 hours. I was absolutely miserable, and I now hate those damn things with a passion.

I'm fascinated by insects but do try and steer clear of stinging bugs. Especially bumbles, wasps, hornets and their ability to sting repeatedly! I've heard of people sometimes developing allergic reactions to stings as they age, that's why we keep a bottle of antihistamines on hand. Just in case.

36. These guys came after me.

I wasn't bothering them, and I was probably 6-8 feet away from the next the first time I was stung, and at least twice that far away the next day. They were just angry, mean little buggers. Believe me, these days I stay as far away as possible. I seem to have developed some funky allergies as I get older, and I'm really afraid of what might happen if I were to be stung again.

23. Not to be pedantic, but

males do not attack or sting...they appear briefly in late summer/early fall to mate, sit around and eat nectar for a week or so, and die. :) Stings are present only in females, as the sting is an adaptation of the ovipositor (egg-laying organ.) Males can bite, though not as nastily as the females (who have more crushing mandibles designed to macerate prey.)

And yes, they can be bellicose and territorial buggers in the case of the social species. Solitary wasp species are generally more docile and uninterested. Some of the solitary-wasp stings are too fine to get through most human skin, being adapted to precisely slip into the vulnerable area of their specific prey to envenomate the prey insect or spider's nerve ganglia.

Just a science-geek sidebar. :) I still have a gut reaction to run from yellowjackets, which unfortunately makes for some hilarious moments on stage at a regular outdoor gig...

26. Ah, yes. I did know that about the males.

I didn't really think about it when I was writing though. :P I was stung at the base of the neck by a yellow-jacket when I was a kid. It wasn't to bad after the initial pain went away though. I'm fascinated by insects myself but give them plenty of space if can.

19. I recently had a wasp's nest outside my apartment

Recently there was a wasp's nest right above the sliding glass door on my apartment which opens to the balcony; the nest was above the sliding glass door right where the downward slope of the roof meets the outside wall. I had previously noticed there being wasps when I went outside to my balcony, but I noticed the nest about two weeks ago when I looked up into the eaves area and saw the nest, wondered what it was, and then noticed the wasps in the nest.

The next day or a subsequent day I went outside to my balcony and was stung on my shoulder by a wasp. It was a little painful at the time but it healed within about a day and there haven't been any noticeable bad aftereffects. It wasn't really bad for me -- I think being stung on the shoulder is much less bad than being stung in the face! -- but I realize it is not a good thing to be stung by wasps or other insects.

I told the apartment management about the wasp's nest and the maintenance people came and sprayed the nest and then removed it, and I have so far not had problems with wasps since.

Really, I mean, they look like tiny F-16's coming towards you. Hornets scare me too, esp the huge mutant ones we seem to have in Northern Virginia.

True story: My 'necky bro in law was in his yard, and threw rocks at a paper hornet's nest in a tree. Next thing he knows, he sees one flying straight at him and it stings hin on the face before he can move.

He goes in the house and gets one of his shotguns....(safety disclaimer: their house was back off the road with a mountain behind it)
