Kiss, Genesis, Chili Peppers, LL Cool J among Rock hall contenders
Hell freezes over! Kiss AND Genesis are nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Yikes!

Must be running out of artists.

The list of possible inductees at next year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony has been announced and includes LL Cool J, the Chili Peppers, Kiss, ABBA, Genesis, the Stooges, and reggae icon Jimmy Cliff. Rounding out the list of a dozen music stars are the Hollies, Donna Summer, Darlene Love, the Chantels, and Laura Nyro. Five of the nominees will actually be inducted at the ceremony, which takes place on March 15 in New York.

3. Pre-"And Then There Were Three" Genesis, hell yes. After that...
...as Black Sabbath would say, "they sold their souls for rock & roll."

I'd say the same for KISS, up to and including "Destroyer."

"KISS Alive" and "Destroyer"...the band's entire reputation basically stems from those two albums. No disrespect to fans of the song "Shandi," of course.

8. It's the Hall of "Fame."
Hard to argue Kiss or the Tripod Genesis weren't famous.

14. Enough people hailed them to make them famous.
Ask ten people on the street to name a song by Genesis, and you'll get ten songs from after Peter Gabriel dropped out.

4. How the hell does LL Cool J get a nom for the RRHOF?
ABBA I suppose as their music was classified as "pop rock". But LL Cool J? Wouldn't his work be considered R&B?

7. R&B?
Rap or Hip Hop, which to my mind continued the spirit of rock and roll after rock had lost it. J had a rock feel as much as a rap feel, though.

21. Who's the avatar?
I thought it was Buddy Guy, but it's not, is it?

And yeah, rap often sounds like rap. But rock didn't sound much like rock in that era.

accepting. Frehley and Criss more than deserve it, having to deal with those other two idiots.

24. Peter Gabriel-era Genesis definitely deserves entry
I know that the R&R Hall of Fame generally has an anti-"art rock" attitude so the fact that Genesis is the first band of that type to even be considered is curious. It helps their case that even during the Gabriel years they were less about musical proficiency and more about good songcraft.

That said, I am curious as to whether they're being nominated mostly for being a platinum selling act (Phil years) or are they being nominated for the entire package.

Either way, an induction could be the thing needed to goose Gabriel into committing to even a "one off" concert of the type Led Zeppelin did a year or so ago.

25. Until they get over their anti-Prog bias
the R&RHOF will continue to be a non-entity to me.

Yes, Rush, and ELP absolutely belong in any "hall of fame" purporting to be centered on the topic of "rock 'n roll."
