Anyone have recommendations re: facial moisturizers?
Just ran out of mine and it wasn't great so I'm asking. I prefer a high SPF, but some of them can be greasy I know.

Your opinions are appreciated. Also if you have any mascara recommendations they would be welcome as well. Thanks. :)

1. I like my Nivea mosturizer with SPF 4.
It is for men, in theory...but its unscented and for sensitive skin so I don't think it matters. It is the one in the white tube and not the cyan, navy or blue tubes.

4. I use Lancome (especially in the winter)
Edited on Thu Sep-24-09 10:29 AM by Haole Girl
It's expensive. But I'd rather cut corners with something else (like toner/soaps).

This is my favorite. And since it has a pump, it doesn't make a mess. Tip: always buy Lancome when they have their free gift, if you can (twice a year) and you'll get a lot of great travel size samples.

:hi:

5. Suntan lotion for faces w/ at least 30 SPF
Most suntan brands make special formulas for faces. I use it even in winter. Goes on very lightly, there's no grease in most of them.

Mine is Banana Boat SunWear Faces SPF 30.

6. For mascara, and I've tried nearly
everything, the only one I'll use now is Loreal Voluminous. I like the waterproof version. It's so silky, and if you put a second coat, you can really make them as long and full as you want.

My 17-year-old daughter didn't want to use the same brand as her mother because that would be uncool I guess, so she tried about a dozen different ones over a couple of years, then ended up back using Loreal Voluminous waterproof too, LOL.

8. i've tried all on this list and more and sadly at the end of the day none of them work
Edited on Thu Sep-24-09 11:47 AM by pitohui
since the result is the same, (doesn't really work) you might as well listen to your dermatalogist and use good old neutrogena or eucerin rather than the stuff that costs $125 an ounce (say, creme de la mer)

at some point you have to get some combination of retinoids, peels, and botox or another filler, well, if you're fair skinned you do

been under a derm's care since i was 10 and, as i said, at the end of the day, there is no face cream that holds back time, that's why we have advanced technologies

i don't plan to wear mascara again until i get an eye lift, if then, once you're much past 40, eye make-up is very aging unless it's very subtle (as in can't tell you're wearing any) -- i don't have white or blonde eyelashes though, i guess if your lashes have no color, you have no choice but to use something -- in days gone by i never really noticed it making much diff. which mascara i used, what's wrong w. regular old maybelline great lash

everyone who isn't a doctor says oil of olay, but it didn't work either and it isn't cheap, even at walmart although it isn't $125 an ounce, i guess it's some price point where a person can convince herself it must be working because she spent "a lot" of money even though it isn't "a lot" of money by dept. store standards...in other words, i think people think it works because it costs more than what they would otherwise use but it doesn't cost so much that they can't afford it at all -- it's a mental thing -- like how people won't buy the cheapest bottle of wine on the menu, they'll take the 2nd or 3rd cheapest and then they don't feel cheap!

9. Thanks... I was using Neutrogena before, but it was a little greasy.
Guess I might as well stick with it. I've also used Oil of Olay and was happy with it, so maybe I'll go another round with that. My main concern is SPF cause I don't care to wear a big floppy hat every time I'm outdoors. If I'm going to be out in it for an extended period of time, sure... but for daily use I'll just use a high-SPF moisturizer.

I pretty much only wear really subtle makeup, one light coat of mascara does me fine. But I do wear it cause mine are short and nearly invisible.

And thanks also to everyone for all the responses so far. :)

12. you will think I am crazy.
I am male, but winter can make my face feel horrible. In the past I have used apple cider vinegar.
So I googled "vinegar as a skin moisturizer" wondering if I was the only one. There were many interesting hits. Here is one with several home made suggestions:
http://www.thefrugallife.com/frugalskin.html

Maybe no help, but some fun reading.
I used a little spritz of vinegar & water basically as an after shave. Burned a little, but my skin was soft as a baby's butt and the winter skin went away.

13. In the winter I use vaseline before bed
No, I'm not kidding!

It really does leave my face feeling soft in the morning, esp around the eyes.

And for you vegan/veggie fans, there is a plant-based version called Un-Petroleum.

Seriously. My face would shrivel and pulverize without it.

(i know, because I'm an old broad & I've run out of it - and experienced the difference. It's SCARY!)

It has only 2 ingredients: Electrolyte-free water and glycerin.

I put it on at bedtime over a layer of whatever face lotion i have at the time. (Usually something from Trader Joes).
It isn't greasy, but it IS a non evaporating gel, so it does stay moist by actually attracting moisture to the skin.

Originally - 15 years ago - you could find it in health food stores, but now buy it online.

20. Good moisturizers and mascara
I use Olay Regenerist SPF 15 and like it a lot, it doesn't leave my skin feeling dry after a few hours, like so many others do (I live in a dry climate). They have recently come out with a SPF 50 version, maybe that is something for you. Also, go check out "Paula's Choice" (you can google it). Paula has some great products at very reasonable prices, and SPF is a priority for her.

For mascara, I love Maybelline Lash Discovery. It has a fine, rather small wand, which for me is just much easier to use than the mascara with the big wands.

22. Nivea in the blue tub.
No spf though. I rely on my makeup for spf. Age Rewind (Maybelline) has an 18 spf. SPF in moisturizers makes me break out.
I love Cover Girl's Exact Eyelights mascara (my eyes are green, so the one I use has a touch of purple in it)- great length, doesn't clump and washes off easy. And as stand-by I always have a tube of the "pink and green", Maybelline Great Lash.
