Why is Tide so much more expensive than other laundry detergents?
Like, 3 times as much as the budget brand?

Is it really that much better? I don't really notice a difference, but I don't really have an eye or nose for stuff like that.

Or is it because the brand is so established, they can get away with higher prices just on their reputation alone?

2. To pay for all of the ADVERTISING!
It is the same basic stuff. Borax and washing soda work just as well for regular washing and spot pre-treatments like Shout are far superior to general additives in expensive detergents.

Name brands are more expensive because you are paying for their advertising budgets. There are very few cases where I believe they are ACTUALLY better than the store brand and even then I wonder if I'm just jaded from my youth, sitting in front of a TV.

22. Actually
it is used to clean the track, engine blocks, and gararge floors. Many consumer companies use NASCAR, and motorsports in general, to advertise and market their products. "Support those who support the sport" is a way of life - but it makes it pretty good bang for the buck, as advertising goes.

4. It is pricey, that is for sure.
I do use Tide though. Sometimes I switch to Gain though. Not sure why I pay the extra money. It smells good.

7. It would be interesting to write P&G and ask them that question.
I would be curious what they say.
I think they are even higher than their 'premium' competitors like Wisk.

10. it is targeted to the segment that wants the best and 'perceives' Tide as such.

It sure as hell not meant for the 'Value' Shopper.

16. Why does it take up a majority of the aisle?
I'm not in a high-rent area and it's gotta be the most popular brand - judging from its real estate in the aisle

yikes. Now I sound like a commercial!

I also have a front load washer that doesn't seem to get clothes as clean as top loaders I've had in the past and I find the TideHE works best.

15. No idea, for cleaning power I notice no difference between
Tide/Cheer/Gain compared to Xtra, or Sun...

For smell factor though, tide/cheer/gain all smell better and make your clothes smell better, but thats the only difference I notice.

I use xtra/sun and just use dryer sheets for the added smell factor. I can't afford Tide, tide is usually three times the cost of xtra/sun...
