Who is your favorite Unknown Guitarist(s) ...
By Unknown --- I mean largely unknown outside serious music fans universe

So guys like Satch, Pat Metheny etc are excluded ... You get the picture.

My newest favorite is Guthrie Govan -- I spend hours watching his youtube videos.

Grew up on Christian rock. Don't listen to much of it these days, but the Phil Keaggy albums are still with me. Probably the best 9 fingered guitarist who ever lived. (lost one in a childhood accident, if I remember correctly)

9. Only known to those who do not unknow them assuming that they don't know they don't know.
Or something.

Seriously, though, ask the average American Idol-watching pile of shit, and 99% of them will not know who those two musicians are.

They also won't know Les Paul, unless they've accidentally heard the name of the guitar.

Even though the recording/music industry that makes all that pop music garbage would be radically different if not for Les, Zappa, and a few others.

That's the saddest part for me, that all these asshole shitwit fuckbags who say they "love music" really have no idea what's out there, nor even care who the people are who helped to make it all possible.

Fripp and Belew are known by those who actually care about music, but remain unknown by the unwashed masses who couldn't give a shit about what's good and only want is familiar or what the TV tells them that they like.

30. Govan's good, but deserved a better forum than Asia / GPS...
..."Silent Nation" was a great sounding album, but if there was ever a band in need of a songwriter, it was the John Payne-fronted Asia.

Don't get me wrong...as a King Crimson / Yes fan, I was consistently disappointed by the "Prog Pop" direction of the Wetton-Howe lineup, but Payne's songs were often extreme "groaners"...

When the original Asia regrouped, Govan, drummer Chris Slade and Payne joined Spock's Beard keyboardist Ryo Okumoto for the "GPS" album ("Govan-Payne-Slade," since Okumoto was a "guest"):

...but once again, if you paid any attention to the lyrics, it made the songs a pretty tough listen.

No idea what Govan's doing now, but he has the chops to align himself with bigger talents than John Payne.

deserves for being one of the greatest guitarists ever.

Then there's John Scofield and a guy named Michael Jackson, Michael Gregory Jackson, who finally gave up on his name and started recording as Michael Gregory.

68. I love John Scofield's playing --but I am not too fond of his tone.... he should go easy on the
drive and sustain .. check for instance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkTCycmsy6s&feature=related

I like overdriven sounds ( Scott Henderson for Eg) -- but somehow the mood Scofield tries to create through his melody doesn't suit the tone of his amp. I really would love to hear the same tune with a cleaner sound through a Roland JC-120 amp.
