5. My first horse was a black stalliion

That's no joke - he was a 4 year old black Morgan stallion, small (14.1 hands) with a gorgeous glossy black mane and tail, beautiful little round hooves and the nicest, sweetest disposition you could ask for. I was 10 years old and it was like all my dreams came true with him.

This is him with my mom riding (my mom was petrified of horses but Diablo cured her :) ) -



And here I am riding him in the 4th of July parade - I was about 12 and those are mares ahead of us. He was a perfect gentleman.

But I love 'em. I used to live on a farm that had about 30 or more Belgians - they were so beautiful.

The TB is the horse I own now and I love her coloring too. She's a dark, glossy bay and she's a great-granddaughter of Seattle Slew. As for best disposition, I think my little black Morgan Diablo had the best. He was the most honest and forgiving horse I've ever had the privilege to know.

If I had the land and the income to keep one, I'd pick one of the draft breeds.

That's a lot of Belgians on one farm, too! And a lot of hay to feed them ;)

I got the idea the Morgan was the best from your other posts. What I meant was of the ones you own now. Or is it just the TB at the moment? I'm unclear on how many horses you own... :)

It's expensive to keep a horse. I don't have anywhere at home to keep her so I board. Either way, it's not cheap. She's only 4 years old and very green so she keeps me busy enough!

The Arab and the Standarbred are horses I've owned in the past. The Arab/Quarter cross is my daughter's horse.

I'm partial to Arabs because to me they are the classic beauty in a horse, but for riding I've come to really like Tennessee Walkers.

The Quarter/Arab cross picture is gorgeous...But I love all horses. Tennessee Walkers are great for long rides and those of us who find posting tedious.

13. Arab by far. I had three of them until 2 years ago.

I had to move from our 20 acres and could not keep them. They are probably the only horse breed that shows affection like other pets.

Our Arabs were free to roam our land and come to the house when ever they wanted to. They would have come inside if we would have let them. We were all one big happy family. I sure do miss them.

The Pony Express and U.S. Cavalry in the old west. The sole survivor of Custer's regiment was a Morgan/Mustang mix, "Comanche". Mounted police have preferred Morgan horses to cope with city conditions.

22. I think you're giving TB's a bum rap

They tend to be extremely hard-working, willing horses and in the right hands they'll go to hell and back.

My TB is only 4 years old but she is bombproof, spooks at nothing and will go anywhere. As for Arabs being stubborn, I disagree with you there, too. Arabs are smart and you have to work with them, not try to force them. If you do work with them though, they will take care of you.

Horses are a lot smarter than people give them credit for, imo.

I consider them a lot smarter than those who pretend they know what they're talking about when they don't.

Horse breeds, like dog breeds, have different characteristics that are unique to them. From the pics posted above, most people wouldn't be able to say for sure what breed they were - I know because they were/are my horses. But given a conformation shot, one in which the horse is shown from the side standing square, most horse people could tell you what breed it probably is.

Differences in size, musculature, general body type (stocky, slender, tall, lean, short or long-backed), mane and tail, sometimes coloring, shape of head, set of neck, legs and feet... Some breeds are easier to recognize than others and some horses of a particular breed don't have the typical characteristics.

I'm not sure if you really wanted an answer to that question but there you are. :)

I learned to ride on an old morgan gelding named Comanche. He was an awesome horse, the patience of a saint to put up with me.
