What was your first comic book?
Mine was in the late 80's, it was a Superman comic in which he was reading all of the Xmas mail he got during the holiday season. He had to go through tons of mail, and he would choose a select few and grant their wishes/demands.

So, Duers which comic was your first? Btw, my father bought me my first.

1. The one that started my collection was Amazing Spiderman #298
My very earliest comic book was bought on a cross country car trip with my family. It was an issue of The Sword of the Atom. It might have been the first issue of the first mini-series.

2. My first Spidey comic
was also in the last 80's, he was fighting Venom. I don't recall the issue number, but on the cover of the comic Spidey was walking through the sewers, and hanging above him in all his awesome glory was Venom. :)

Can't remember the ish either, Venom was a go to villain in that era.

4. Venom was the reason why I picked up
Spidey comics, :) I thought he was just, so utterly great. The Green Goblin, Venom, Carnage, are my favorite Spidey villains.

5. Loved the Green Goblin
But my favorite period had to have been the Hobgoblin arc, at least the early part of it before it got all dragged out.

LOVED collecting those back issues.

I also really liked Mysterio and Kraven.

Brian Michael Bendis just introduced Mysterio into the Ultimate universe and he's a TOTAL badass.

I kind of fell out of the scene during the period where Carnage ascended so I don't know much beyond the basics about him.

7. I think Carnage hit...hmm,
around 92/93 or so. He was, a level or two more...evil than Venom was, and I liked how Venom/Spidey had to team up to deal with him.

To be honest, I've been out of the loop on current comics, both Marvel and DC is utterly sad. There isn't many comic books shops around me, the closest is about 35miles alway, its hard to keep up. I try to stay active via graphic novels and what not, but it isn't enough. I remember the good old days where every damn week I would be picking up at least 7 different titles, nowadays I'm lucky to find anything current.

6. It was probably a Classics Illustrated.
Richie Rich and Hot Stuff were also early players.

I quickly graduated to G.I. Combat issues of Jeb Stuart and the Haunted Tank.

Edited on Sat Sep-26-09 02:33 AM by AllenVanAllen

It was April 1975. Although I had comics before, they were mostly hand-me-downs from my older brother. This was my first comic. We were on a family trip on a 7/11 pit stop. My mom let me get one comic and some candy.
This is the one I picked:

9. Damn, thats
old school, :) In the upcoming Spidey 4 movie, I believe The Lizard is going to be the villian.

I use to love getting the old marvel spidey/fantastic four cartoons from that era, I still got some of them on vhs...somewheres.

10. Definitely obscure.

Ever seen this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVViBhtyVN0

In my kindergarten class we watched The Electric Company as part of our daily routine. I thought it was corny even then.
It would be very cool to see a live-action Lizard.

14. I bought a handful of issues of "The House of Mystery" while on vacation with my folks
This led to my subscription to "Twilight Zone" magazine at age 11, and a life-long love of macabre comics and books.

But the first comics I bought with the intent of actually starting to read comics were Daredevil 193 and 194, both from 1983 and both rather forgettable:

20. I love the Marvel Star Wars series
even in its goofiness such as Jaxon, the giant green rabbit that's also sapient. I have those Daredevil issues as well, but I didn't get them until recently.

17. Tales of Suspense #77
Gene Colan's Iron Man, Jack Kirby's Captain America, under the same cover for TWELVE CENTS. That title led me to Tales to Astonish (Submariner & Hulk) and Strange Tales (Sr. Strange & Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.)...

I sent an email to Gene Colan via his Web Site a year ago, thanking him for the unbelievable body of work he's created. He sent back a very nice, personal reply. Wish I'd done the same for Jack while he was still alive.

Back in 1992.

I sadly got rid of it in my all-too-foolish "Comics are for kids" phase, and had to rebuy it about three years ago.

But it was out of stock. So my first comic book was a Marvel Treasury Edition...

And the rest is history.

As far back as I can remember, I'd always had comic books. It was back in the 60's. Probably before the Marvel explosion. Maybe Green Hornet.

28. Hope y'all are happy:
just spent half an hour digging out my magazine-sized comics boxes. Luckily, it was the box under the easily removed crap, instead of the ones underneath the eight long boxes of comics :P

That said, the first comic I purchased with my own money to be owned by me, too, was Marvel's "Savage Tales" circa 1985.

Before that, all comics I ever read were ones my brothers owned, including the first few years of Heavy Metal :D
And after that, I was launched into the world of black & white comics, especially the non-superhero type. The first of those was The Dreamery and my introduction to Stinz :D

I was 10 and an older friend who played D & D with my family gave them to me. They were the original black and whites, which I used my color pencils on to make them look better.

I still love the series and can now read all of them for free online: http://elfquest.com/gallery.html :woohoo:

41. Well, I managed to stay in the lines. :^) And since we had a very large
set of artist's color pencils I was able to do more than your basic colors.

When I was older and understood the concept of what made comic books valuable, I coulda kicked myself. But then I realized whatever money they would have been worth would still not have bought me as much joy and entertainment as coloring them in did. :D

Soon followed by Superman and Classics Illustrated. Bloody good idea, Classics Illustrated, probably gave many a kid a taste for literature.

Someone upthread mentioned Sad Sack. Thanks, I'd forgotten all about Sad Sack, I loved that strip. So poignant.
