Yesterday I saw a bunch of flies on my breakfast nook window. That was odd since we had had virtually no flies all season. I swatted at a bunch of them, wondered where they had come from, then noticed the window was a bit ajar (the kind that fold in for cleaning). It was a very small opening but I snapped it back in place and figured that was that. This morning the window has a bunch of them again. I went to the living room and dining room and those windows are full of them too. I have killed all of them I have seen so far but cannot figure out where they are coming from. We thought maybe the cat had drug something in but we have smelled nothing and have searched everywhere we can think of but have found nothing. And the flies don't seem to congregate around a specific place but just these three big windows. The funny thing is they don't buzz around in the kitchen or anywhere else - just these windows. How can they be getting in and what do we do?

Tachinid flies often end up in homes, especially late in the year or during winter, when a small mammal or reptile dies inside a wall, in a crawlspace, the attic space, etc. You might not ever notice decomposition odors, but if the animal could get in, tachinid flies can usually find the carcass. Then, when the larvae mature, they crawl away and pupate. When the adults emerge, they go seeking a way out, and often find cracks and crevices that lead into the interior living space. From there they're drawn to windows.
Also, check to make sure you don't have a zombie denning up for the winter under your house or in the attic!
