He came from the same area of PA my mom was from. They shared as lot of small time values that was called Main Stream republicanism back in that day...

If he were alive today, I think he wouldn't still be a republcian.

133. You are correct!
There still are a couple of decent Repubs --Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins from Maine come to mind. Someone posted in another thread regarding the necessity of keeping decent Repubs from changing parties. My guess is that if there were still some moderates around to help keep that party in check and from going off the rails (too late, I suppose), then maybe they would be more useful staying within the party. An interesting concept. What is your opinion on this idea?

146. I know that both these women are moderates, by today's standards,
but to me, any repub who hasn't vehemently denounced the direction their party has been headed since Reagan has pretty much lost any respect I might have had for them. I think the Democratic party has more than enough blue dogs already and doesn't need the likes of these two, nor Specter to join their ranks. Let em stay where they are and maybe somehow try to save their party from going full-on fascist ( which I also believe is probably a done deal). But yeah, I'm old enough to remember decent and honorable moderate, and even ( believe it or not, kids) liberal republicans. Been one hell of a long time since that though. Really since the mid to late 60's...

170. agreed
Snowe & Collins may be moderate compared to the other 38 Republicans in the Senate, but they are still to the right of many Republicans from the 80s and earlier (There used to be a "Gang of Six" moderate Republicans in the Senate from the 1970s and 80s from the northeast - Lowell Weicker of CT (more liberal than many of today's Democrats), Chaffee from Rhode Island, and a few others whose names I forget, that were true moderates.

172. Hell...
Barry Goldwater was a moderate compared to the raving, hate-filled lunatics that have overrun the GOP.

Sure he was hawkish, but he had nothing but contempt for the religious loonies...I've heard more then once he didn't exactly get along with Reagan either and he generally fell more in line with the libertarian "stay the hell out of my bedroom" position on social issues in his later career.

"Mister Garibaldi!"
Head of Security, Babylon 5

He was utterly brilliant in that role and he could have been conservative in it, but in that context, it didn't matter. The fact that he has a RW hate-radio show now, disappoints the heck outta me...

Did he and Doyle not actually READ the scripts they were performing? How can they possibly have read all of the stuff about Clark and Nightwatch and not see it play out in the Bush admin?

Scoggins is hard to read. I did come to accept her as the Commander of B5, but her delivery of her lines was always a bit odd. Not quite wooden, but off.

Still, they are good actors, and I enjoy listening to their commentary on the various episodes.

I think he's a genuine Libertarian. Doesn't like people telling him what to do, even if it's for his own good or for the good of those around him.

Not that I agree with him on much, but I'm not certain he was ever avowedly pro-GOP. I could be wrong, though.

44. Going from rich to prison turned him Republican
“I have a really interesting political point of view, and it’s not always something I say too loud at dinner tables here, but you can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal. You can’t. I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone else, but it was very, very, very educational for me and has informed my proclivities and politics every since.”

now. Also, I think I remember hearing Dennis Hopper say on "The View" (before the election) that he was a Obama supporter. I think Bush made quite a few folks really re-think what being a Republican is in this day and age. One of my best friend's sister and her husband who had always been Repubs are now Democrats who voted for Obama. I'm shocked to hear that about Robert Downey. Jr. I'm going to check that out more in depth because that would break my heart too.

144. She was the star of one of those Sci-Fi Saturday night specials
A few months back... she is not nearly as pretty as she used to be. Or else, she had a horrible make-up person in the movie. I think I even posted about it here on DU, commenting more on her decline from star of 90210 and Charmed to grade Z movie sci-fi star.

I kind of liked her when I was younger. But she supported McCain.

I guess Gary Sinise, because he's been in some good movies.

I have a bigger list on the musician side. One is Miranda Lambert, whose Revolution is one of the best country albums of the year. I even detect some country-punk on the CD! Disappointing about her politics, but unless she says "I hate Obama" throughout the music, I'll still listen to her.

Very funny deadpan actor. Loved him in "Coach" and "Call to Glory", as well as his more recent work in "Blades of Glory" and "My Name is Earl". So I was rather disappointed to find out not only was he a Republican, but not a very smart one at that. Case in point--he gets interviewed by Glenn Beck. Ugh.

If you include directors, then David Zucker. Growing up "Airplane" and the "Naked Gun" series were some of my most favorite movies and I still find them side splitting hilarious. And then he decides to make that piece of dreck (that thankfully bombed) "An American Carol". My hope is that brother Jerry still has some sense in him but I have no idea.

I'm not a Red Sox fan, but I do have to say I admired Curt Schilling's performance in the 2004 postseason, so it sucks that he's a hard core Republican.

All that being said, I can't imagine boycotting any movie or TV show for the sole reason that one of the actors is a conservative or Republican. (That being said, if it is pure conservative propoganda crap--like American Carol--then I have no interest in wasting my time with that.)
