Are there many PhD jobs that permit someone to work independently? |
|
Just curious... I'm working on a PhD in media studies with an emphasis in media and political culture.

work for some candidates, i'm assuming you have some theory behind you. plus, just showing up is 99% of the battle; dazzle them with bullshit, then you can get slots on cable news as an expert.

Like from Pew? A buttload of money that lets someone work out something independently for like 5 years or so...

why would you want to? that's a lot of time/$$$ to invest in an education where you won't even be receiving any benefits
you could have gotten a job with no health insurance and no paid vacation pretty much by falling out of bed in the morning and not be saddled w. loads of student debt -- and, of course, when you start your own business, you will now also be saddled w. business/marketing debt
the older i get, the more i regret the years i spent as a writer -- it seemed a cool thing to do at the time but comes a day when you're 40 and really that you absolutely positively can't buy health insurance nor are you now employable at any job where you could receive it because you spent too many years as a free lance
don't screw up your life like that, seriously
if you're getting a ph.D. you are just working too hard to "settle"
a job where somebody else pays for your insurance/benefits is the road to financial security that WORKS, self-employment is for most people the road to bankruptcy, a few of us muddle along because we have no other choice and only a tiny tiny percentage of the self-employed will ever enjoy any measure of financial freedom
you're too smart to make a stupid decision
good luck -- there's no such thing as working "independently," you can have a job (one boss) or you can be "independent/free lance" and have to kiss the ass of every potential customer who comes along -- that's just life -- and just think of the FUN when one of those clients doesn't pay you on time...or at all...
