Poll question: If you have not already been, do you have any desire to go to Europe?
Edited on Mon Sep-28-09 09:25 AM by Bertha Venation
I don't. I have never wanted to go. I don't see the allure (aside from historical things, which I don't mind reading about instead of seeing them).

You?

2. Yes, go, go, go
It's like here, except totally different.

;-)

No, the atmosphere in Europe is much different than here. For one thing, it's much easier to socialize in public. People happily chat a way in cafes, shops, and in general are much less uptight than here in the US.

I'd live there if I could.

That and the fact that my last name probably takes up 40 pages in the phone directory.

29. Everyone should visit Germany. If I have the chance to go again.
I would go to Frankfurt too. Have done the Moselle and Rhine and had an incredible time. Would like to go back and do more. Loved Heidelberg, wonderful castle, great people. All of the areas of Germany we visited were wonderful. Amazing history, beautiful sights.

5. Absolutely!
Travelling around the world and experiencing what it's like in different places would be fantastic.

I've been to England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and am planning on a trip to France, then Italy.

6. I don't know if they'd let me in
I have a little bit of a criminal record from back in the days whe I was an unmedicated crazy person. Disorderly conduct and trespassing, both misdemeanors that I was just fined for. But they may view things differently over there. I know that they won't let you into Canada if you have a DUI. It's a felony up there and they don't let felons in.

But I think I would like to go some day if all of that isn't a problem.

8. Yeah, that would be a good idea
I went up to the Canadian border one time not thinking about them asking about that sort of thing. I was in my rig and I had 40,000 pounds of nickle coils on going up to the Royal Canadian Mint. They almost didn't let me in when they asked about criminal history and I told them of the past problems- Royal Canadian Mint be damned. I had to talk to an immigration official. They have that on file and I can cross the border without too much trouble now.

It would definitely be a good idea to be prepared.

25. no actually that would be a terrible idea
canada is different and you've already fucked yourself from visiting canada because you opened mouth, inserted foot

european countries don't ask about felonies if you have a valid usa passport, at least not any western european country i've visited, so why ask for trouble and put yourself on record WITH THEIR EMBASSY as a possible problem?

i mean, sure rub their nose in the fact that you've had problems and i'm sure they'll be happy to put you on the persona non grata list

don't ask, don't tell works just fine for visiting europe

24. they'd let you in, they wouldn't even ask about it (canada is different)

i'm not sure what the issue is w. canada but there was some dispute w. the bush administration and that's what is causing all the problems going to/from canada -- by the way when i entered canada this summer no one asked if i'd ever been arrested etc. -- i was just waved in, so maybe w. obama in charge they'll loosen up on some of this crap -- in any case, how would canada know if you had a dui? i know lots of people who just boldly said they had no dui's and they were allowed into canada w. no problem either -- i was a bit flabbergasted wondering why you would waste time asking people, every time they drove from detroit to windsor, if they'd ever been arrested -- who is going to say YES? canada can't possibly have the criminal records of every man, woman, and child in america...MOST of the folks getting barred from canada are the idiots too stupid to understand the value of the little white lie, sure, if you get caught in a fib to the canadian immigration dudes, they won't let you in -- but if you have an arrest record and you admit it, YOU'RE NOT GETTING IN ANYWAY so it's to your advantage to fib because chances are you'll skate

i've flown into a number of european countries and no one asks anything, you just show your passport to some guy in a booth, he asks if you're a tourist or for business, and if you say tourist, he puts a stamp in it and waves you on

never heard anyone in europe ask if i was guilty of any felonies, all they wanna know is do i have a passport and a credit card

9. I've been four times over the last three years. Always to different places.
Would go again in a heartbeat. I'm not a particularly spiritual person, but I believe that, in some way, travel is good for the soul.

I have no desire to go anywhere. I dislike traveling. I am sure I will like some of the places (if I did travel), but I really have no desire to.

17. I spent my summers in Brussels when I was in college, since my parents were living there at the time
I would love to go back and see a bunch of places that I never made it to. And I don't think I could ever turn down a chance to visit London or Prague again. Berlin too - when I was there last the area where the Wall had been was a huge construction crane forest. It would be interesting to see it now.

19. If I had the money, I'd be on the next plane to Europe. I've been
before and will never tire of all the wonderful sights to be seen. The people are amazing, so is the food. We used to travel on a shoestring and had a great time. Did our research, saw the sights most important for tourists to see. England, France, Belgium, Germany, Holland. If I'm lucky enough to go again, it will be to Italy.

I think to best enjoy your trips, you should do a great deal of research in areas that are of interest to you, plan a flexible itinerary and just go.

We have a great interest in history and there is so much to see everywhere. All sights are much more vivid and inspiring to see in person. No matter how many pictures you see in books, there is no way to really describe the feeling of seeing them in person.

I could name a bunch of places that would take your breath away. France: Mt St Michel in Normandy was probably the most amazing sight for me. The list is long but Mt St M took my breath away.

This is only one place, there are thousands.

22. I'm not much of a traveler.
I love the places I go once I get there but I have always hated the inconvenience and stress of travel. I've never been overseas and with the hassles of flying right now I doubt I'll ever go.

I'm Dane and American Indian, and it would be good to see the homeland of my white side, plus I find the Scandinavian culture damn fascinating.

26. I want to see London before I die.
That's been one of my goals, since I was a teenager. I'd like to see as much of the city as possible, but I'd especially want to walk across the famous Abbey Road crosswalk, barefoot. :)

28. London is fantastic but offers a lot more than just Abbey Road,
It is an expensive city to visit but one you will never regret. I don't know how old you are but if I can suggest, go as soon as you can. Amazing sights, wonderful history. You'll have a great time. There is a problem however. Once you go to London, you'll want to see much more of Europe. It is the start of a great adventure. Nothing like Europe here in the US. They have thousands of years of history compared to our several hundred.

I was in my late 40's when I took my first trip. Have been 6 times since. Even thought I paid for the trip mostly on my credit card and paid for the rest of the year, I would not change it for the world. Incredible memories.

27. I live in Europe
It's pretty fucking nice over here. Some things are aggravating, mostly cultural differences and some laws that seem stifling, but this place rocks. The mentality of the people is so different and life is enjoyed more here. Family time is sacred, people are paid decent wages and strolling along on a Sunday afternoon (when everything is closed) is a national pastime.

Munich is 900 years old and still has the stamp of Rome in some places. We have palaces and parks bigger than you could imagine. Food is much cheaper here than in the US. My life is pretty good over here.
