Because I don't. And I use "folks" all the time. I also use "people" when yelling at my fellow drivers because they are either asleep or doing something equally stupid and the term is all-inclusive of, well, people ;) "Folks" is reserved for people I like :P

"People" is derived from the French. There were formerly class distinctions in their usage and, though that may still be the case, I think it's more a matter of regional usage at this point.
