What distro of Linux are you using? I have played around with Ubuntu a bit, but haven't had time to do much more than that.

19. It seemed appropriate ...

The trashcan is where I put old crap and thought about whether I'd delete it later. Stuff I didn't actually want just got deleted. :)

The top one is OpenSuSE, the bottom a bastardized version Slackware. It was Slackware with some kernel patches from Novell I needed to make my mouse work properly. I had this thing a few years back where I wanted a metallic blue mouse. I finally found one, but it was apparently the most exotic mouse ever made. Even Windows has issues with it.

I'm about to change to Mint, which is a derivative of Ubuntu. I really dislike SuSE, but it was bleeding edge on the KDE 4 desktop manager when I installed it, and I wanted to mess with that.

20. I tried Mint, but I couldn't get the video card to work,
Edited on Mon Sep-28-09 10:11 PM by tXr
so I went back to Ubuntu. The computer is a Dell Dimension 2400 circa 2003 that I got from my grandfather. It was very slow and infested with AOL, among other things. Instead of reformatting with Windows I increased the memory from 256mb to 2gb and gave Ubuntu a try, which has worked quite well. I really wanted to try Mint, but I couldn't get the video card configured properly and I am too much of a Linux noob and too busy with other things to really get into figuring out the problem. Maybe when I have more time I will give it another try. :hi:

23. Ah, yeah, that's the downside of Mint ...

Mint is built to make things like 3D acceleration, playing mp3s, other media, flash videos, etc. more automatic upon installation. The downside of this is that Mint ends up having the opposite problem of most Linux distros. It has more problems with older hardware, specifically graphics cards.

If you have a newer graphics card, it's actually easier to get it working than on Ubuntu, which is backwards from most distros.

Funny thing is that I've been compiling my own graphics drivers for so long, I've become bored with it, which is why I'm going to Mint. At first, it was a challenge, something interesting to do. Now I just want to get past it.

Making the conversion does take an investment of time, especially if you're accustomed to a Windows world. I moved to Linux almost exclusively (some games I can't abandon that I cannot make work under Linux) about five years ago. It was frustrating at first, but now I find things far easier the Linux way.

If you need any help in the future, feel free to look me up. I hang out in the Computer Help and Support forum, so I can always be found there. Several other Linux users, specifically Ubuntu users, hang out there as well, and they're what I'd call experts.

Hard to believe those are still flying!

Your son sounds like me when I was young. How old is he? He may well know airplanes better than I do!

Sorry to hear about his color blindness. Sometimes people can take alternative versions of color blindness tests and get better results. You never know.

That particular photo has been restored to (I hope) the original colors. I found it recently, and it was badly faded and discolored. Someday I'll have a photoshop expert take a stab at it.

year until he can join Civil Air Patrol. They've got a really good Wing here at the local municipal airport.

I am still hopeful, if only for this dream he's had since he was 4, that things will change.

That really is a great shot, av8rdave.
