CNN NEW YORK - Indian musician Ravi Shankar, who rose to prominence in the U.S. through his friendship with Beatle George Harrison and his subsequent involvement in the benefit concert, album and film "Concert For Bangladesh," savagely attacked a reporter who asked him a seemingly innocent question during a press conference earlier today.
Shankar was in New York to promote his upcoming series of concerts ate Madison Square Garden, "I Hope You Appreciate The Playing As Much As The Tuning." Near the end of the 20-minute Q&A session, a reporter asked "Mr. Shankar, do you eat RAGA-muffins?"
Shankar leaped from his seat and bit off the lower portion of the reporter's left ear in a scene reminiscent of the brutal 1997 Mike Tyson - Evander Holyfield fight. Spitting the torn flesh to the ground, Shankar bellowed "DID THAT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, MOTHERF**KER?" He then began to pummel the reporter with his fists and kicked him repeatedly, over and over and over again, in his groin.
Witnesses commented on the fact that Shankar had always been considered a peaceful, gentle man, not at all prone to biting off people's ears. Or kicking them in the jewels, either. But especially not both.
Shankar abruptly bolted from the scene, ducking out a back door and into a waiting limousine. As he drove away, he "mooned" the shocked crowd, driving through downtown New York with his nude buttocks on display from the rear window.
Tickets for the MSG shows go on sale tomorrow.
