Good morning Lounge
How are you today?

My day started fantastic :eyes: A customer comes in and demands (!!!) that we have to be open for her till 5.30pm (our library closes at 4pm). She came extra from Bremen to study here and besides, she called Friday to let us know and that is what it says in the Internet too .... uhhh ... she called and told me she would come this week, not that she wants to stay till 5.30pm. I kicked her out at 4pm yesterday when she wanted a bunch of new books from the stack (she is scanning old almanacs for compositions by Beethoven and wants ALL almanacs we have in the reading room - and we have a lot). So I argued with her this morning that we are normally closing at 4pm and that just calling and letting us know she comes doesn't mean she can stay that much longer. That is only possible after she asks us and if we agree to it. I told her I work till 6pm today so she can stay that long, but that doesn't mean it will be that way the whole week

I tell ya, the customers don't seem to care about the opening hours anymore .... they are the most important people in the world and librarians have to do what they want. Period.

Picture of the Day (do you remember them? billyskank, tjwmason, me, swimboy, Mr.swimboy)

1. goodmorning MissHC.
wow some people have a LOT of nerve and can be so rude. I hope that doesn't happen often.

I'm up and almost ready to go again. I work with a few very rude people and it makes the day miserable at times.

It's so cold and rainy again today. Only 47 degrees this morning.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

:hi:  :loveya:

Most of my customers are nice and friendly but I notice more and more an ignorance of our opening hours. I am normally very friendly to my customers but when they come and are THAT rude and demanding I am not staying too friendly anymore. There is no reason for them to walk all over me.

Since often we stay at work longer than 4pm it isn't really a problem. I just don't like it when they are expecting it without asking.

The picture was taken 2006 (if I remember correctly) in London at a mini DU meet-up :D

I never been a librarian but I was detailed to a DFAC when my hand was broken and I had a number of problems with patrons. It was difficult because some people giving me a hard time were a higher rank then I but sometimes I needed to set them straight.

 Hope the rest of the day is better for you. :hi:

I can imagine how tough it must have been for you with higher ranks at the library. It is amazing that some people - just because they earn more - think they can treat you like shit. I am too old for that bullshit. I treat all my customers the same, no matter if they are students or professors.

13. Oh sorry - I didn't mean library
I'm so conditioned with Army acronyms I forget that other people might not understand what I'm saying. DFAC=Dining Facility. My job was to count people(for reference to know how much food to order), make sure all DFAC rules are followed, check food temperatures, etc. This DFAC was in Arif Jan, Kuwait and I was detailed there because I couldn't go into Iraq due to a broken hand(Can't hold a weapon). For the most part Army and other branches were respectful and knew and followed the rules. One time I informed a Chief Warrant Officer-5 he was taking too many gatorade packets and he thanked me and complimented me for upholding a standard to him despite the rank on the other hand a full bird colonel gave me a hard time when I told him the rules about how you have to show a DOD or some sort of Civilian contractor card.

It was the civilian employees that gave me the hardest time by far and had no respect. There was this window behind me where there was a hand washing station and one of the strictest rules. I watched him fly by and I told him to go back and wash his hands. He said (paraphrasing) I washed my hands before I came here. I told him I didn't see him wash his hands and he became furious. He went back to wash his hands and went directly to my NCOIC(Non-commissioned officer-in-charge) and what my NCOIC told me was that the guy said to him, a PFC telling a GS-7 what to do you? A GS-7 is the equivalent of a Major. My NCOIC said to him "If you were a Major you'd have to go back and wash your hands."

I got many stores but I'll cut myself off as I already rambled enough. I hate confrontations so I was only doing what my NCOIC instructed me to do and he'd get on me for not enforcing the rules.

22. That's nice and convenient that
you can head for swimming right after work. We have a pool where I work, so I can swim over my lunch break. It's nice to work out during the middle of the day because then I have energy to keep me going through the rest of the day, and in case I'm crabby I can get rid of that while swimming.

My suit though is getting pretty shabby. The chlorine does that to it so I think I'm going to have to purchase a new suit. I bought my current one pretty cheap and I'm hoping I can find another one at a good price again.

23. I think
that would be too much stress for me with drying the hair afterward and looking representable again. I prefer going after work. Then I can power out myself and then go home crash on the couch.

I had to buy a new bathing suit. I have a tankini but that thing is rather unsuitable for swimming or Water Aerobics. It looks nice though :D

25. I LOVE tankini's.
I have several and that's what I wear when I go on vacation. But you are right, they are not suitable for swimming. One piece works best.

My hair is short, and to be honest, I can shower after swimming and get dressed in under 10 minutes. When the weather is warm, I don't even dry my hair. I just go back to work with it wet. Now that it's getting cooler outside, I'll just stand under the hand dryer and get most of the moisture off.

That's good enough for me, but some of my friends *gasp*!

She finds a very good collection of almanacs from the 18th and 19th century here. There aren't many libraries with such a collection. If she writes something about her research I better get a copy of that book for free.

We are trying very hard to help our customers in every possible way. That is no question for me, as it is my job. But I get upset when people are ungrateful and start demanding in an arrogant way.
