Edited - actually, I was thinking of a different BB song. They do use theremins occasionally, though.

Common mistake. They used a Tannerin which sounds like a theremin but gives spot on pitch control. http://www.tompolk.com/Tannerin/Tannerin.html

3. That part is being played by two mandolins. |

One is playing the half notes and one is playing the arpeggiated eighth notes.
Both Ray Pohlman and Barney Kessel played mandolin on the session. (Kessel's was a custom built 12-string)
It sounds extra odd, because they are recorded pretty far off mic (with lots of reverb). They are also slightly out of tune, which adds to the dreamy effect.
