1. No
seems like giving to local charities like food banks, shelters and so forth is more effective.

i don't recall liking the amount United Way spent on other than the targeted activities, although maybe that's different now or different in your area.

2. Well I was under the impression that the bulk of the money goes to where you designate
It does help it comes out of my paycheck before I get the money. That way I know I'm sending something each year to my favorite 2 charities. But what you've said I have heard before.

4. But I donate to them through my paycheck
and United Way is always on the list. our list shows how much goes to the charity's admin and fundraising.

i like the idea that i can donate passively and not have to motivate myself to write a check. i donate more when it's through my paycheck because it's automatic.

3. Nope. Never have, never will.

I'd rather give the money directly to the charity and cut out the UW overhead plus I really dislike the way workplace fund raising is conducted.

Oh and years ago I applied for a job that the interviewer said was a perfect match for my CV but was told off the record that the position was going to be filled by someone who was related to big donor.

6. They shouldn't, and I was glad that the guy did me the favor of letting me know.
No need to waste any more time following up or waiting for the phone to ring.

7. I used to give to the generic United Way
then there was the United Way scandal and that pretty much stopped my donations. Now I don't have it at my current job.

9. My money goes to the ACLU and Planned Parenthood directly.
When I can afford to give more I donate to local services for the homeless and hungry, civil rights groups, and breast cancer research.

I would not donate to the United Way. For many, many years they funneled a hell of a lot of money to the Boy Scouts of America, and in some places they probably still do. The boy scouts actively discriminate against Gays and Atheists. So no money for the United Way.

10. We don't participate in the United Way campaign
We're a charity (a food bank) and we are not a member of United Way. We don't want United Way's restrictions on our own fundraising. We raise more money on our own than we would get as a UW member agency.

I do give monthly to my own agency and I contribute directly to many other charities.

12. NO. I was threatened with being fired if I did not contribute.
Fuck United Way, they are a bunch of fucking corporate thieves, trying to guilt the employees into contributing to what the execs will not contribute to. FUCK THEM.

I will give to the charities of my choice.

13. No, never has. It feels way too heavy-handed to get a form in my box every year
and be told that I have to sign it and turn it in even if I choose not to contribute. (of course, I've never handed it back and nothing has ever happened to me, so I guess it could be more heavy handed... :) )
