WICHITA — Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputy Brian Etheridge was ambushed by a man hiding in the back yard of his house, Sheriff Robert Hinshaw said today.

Etheridge was shot twice, mortally wounded, Monday around noon while answering a call about a reported larceny at 3636 S. Rock Road.

Hinshaw said evidence at the scene indicates Richard L. Lyons, 27, was lying or sitting next to some brush and a tree with a 30-30 rifle and a cache of ammunition, waiting for the sheriff's deputy who responded to his report of a theft.

Etheridge, 26, happened to be that officer.

The call came in to 911 at 11:42 a.m., and Etheridge arrived at the house at 11:51.

When no one answered his knock at the front door, Hinshaw said, Etheridge requested contact information from the dispatcher. He attempted to contact the caller, then went around to the back yard to see if anyone was there.

He did not see the man hiding in the brush, Hinshaw said, and was either walking to the back door or returning to the front of the house when Lyons shot him in the back.

2. My condolences to you and your town.
My Grandmother and Grandfather lived there for many years.

Do you know where Grove Street is? There was a Rudy's BBQ on the corner, my Grandmothers house was right behind it. Sadly her old house burned down years ago.

5. Another senseless tragedy!!
Being a police officer is one of the most dangerous jobs. I lost a friend who was a police officer in a bad car accident in TX, it was heart breaking.

I know where Grove and Pawnee are. Brings back fond memories.

6. How terribly sad. He died in the line of duty.
My brother used to be cop, now a state trooper. I am always terrified when I hear these stories. Especially with all the cop hate here. My prayers go out to his family and your town.
