I'm okay if we only had the option to recommend (meaning that we could not "unrecommend").
When scanning through the list of threads, yes, even in the Lounge, a recommend or three often signals that it's worth reading.
It's similar in GD/GDP for me. If a post has tons of views or replies but no recommends, a lot of times, I'll skip it (all things being equal).

I think the lounge needs a nuclear unrecommend function -- as in, as soon as the mods need to delete a posting, the thread goes poof. That would really clean the place up since there are obviously some posters who haven't learned the IGNORE options.

Since I try to behave according to the rules here I've never received even a mod warning, never mind a forced ignore. I just don't see evidence that forced ignores make any difference other than to embolden those who are on the 'winning' side of the equation.
