What's your favorite board game?
Do you usually win?

1. Pandemic -
it's a "cooperative play game". You either all win, or you all lose - and the world dies.

It's GREAT!

42. To save the world.
It's kinda difficult explain really. Here's a blurb:

"You are specialists at the CDC/Atlanta where you watch several virulent diseases break out simultaneously all over the world. The team mission is to prevent a world-wide pandemic outbreak, treating hotspots while researching cures for each of the four plagues before they get out of hand.

Players must plan their strategy to mesh their specialist's strengths before the diseases overwhelm the world. For example, the Operations Specialist can build research stations, which are needed to find cures for the diseases. The Scientist needs only 4 cards of a particular disease to cure it instead of the normal 5. But the diseases are breaking out fast and time is running out: the team must try to stem the tide of infection in diseased areas while developing cures. If disease spreads uncontrolled, the players all lose. If they can cure all four diseases, they win.

The board shows earth with some big population centres. On each turn a player can use four actions to travel, cure, discover and build. Cards are used for this but the deck also contains Epidemics..."

It's really fun.

3. I have a few
I'm lousy at most of them, and I shouldn't be.

Chess-I think this is a case of I don't know how to move the pieces
Scrabble-Get bad tiles
Checkers-Don't know why
Connect 4- Lose track of opponents spaces

37. It's a lot of fun. There are other variants of the game as well.
St. Petersburg and Puerto Rico are basically the same game, and they're just as good.

Here's a java based PC version of San Juan that's pretty faithful to the board game, with adjustable A.I. that can be pretty tough.

49. He's been playing since he was 8.
He's very, very, very, very good.

His uncle, from whom we are estranged, got through high school by charming his high school teacher by playing continuously.

His teacher was the Australian National Chess Champion.

I never beat my brother at chess, and I learned a lot of chess by losing to my brother.

Although I will never speak to him again, the guy was a fabulous chess player, and if there are any genes I would like my boy to share with his uncle, chess playing would be the one's in question.

54. My father was a bit of a douche bag.
He made me and my two other sisters study at least an hour a night from when we turned 4 till about junior high were of course we were in the chess club so we at least got to play with other people instead of studying from a book. I'm actually a professional since I won money in a few tournaments, but I'm no Bobby Fischer that's for sure.

10. It's Trivial Pursuit...
and I haven't lost in almost 20 years going back to when I was 11...and no, those adults were not pulling punches because they were playing a child. I have an innate ability to be able to recall every written page I've ever read nearly-verbatim. Seems neat, but virtually useless and the trade-off is that I cannot remember much of anything I'm told verbally for more than a few minutes.

I still have the 1975 seasons of baseball, basketball, and the 1977 NHL season. I'll pull them out every so often and play a few games; my sports geek childhood memories always call me back..

21. Risk
Edited on Thu Oct-01-09 07:55 AM by JonLP24
I can't say if I usually win because I rarely played. It's impossible for me to find 2-3 people willing to play a whole game. There was a time I did win because I spent the down time studying the board and plotting strategy for hours.

Edit-I like Monopoly-Denver Edition. I can buy Coors Field and Mile High Stadium in place of Boardwalk and the other high value place.

30. lol It's real good for internet
Sometimes certain keys die. For a while it was the p and the 9. For the past couple days I have to really pound on the 'j'(pounded for that to show) for it show. Which is somewhat of a problem when I go to log in because of the first letter of my username. But thankfully not many words that I normally use have a 'j' in them.

I guess I grew up in a Monopoly neighborhood. We would tweak the rules of Monopoly to where the games could possibly last forever. We never found out because a fight would inevitably break out, everyone would go home and we wouldn't talk for days.

Good mix of strategy and luck, and fairly easy to learn. And the final board is a unique work of art every time. I've always liked Cosmic Encounter and Illuminati too, but those are more hardcore and harder to get games going.
