Post Your Pets' Names, Ages and Personalities - photos if you got 'em
Edited on Fri Oct-09-09 11:14 AM by Bertha Venation
Here's the roll call at the Waldorf Cat Haven.

Harry - gray and white tabby. Fifteen years old. Cantankerous old soul. The kids get canned food in the afternoon, and I think Harry eats half of it. Uses puppy pads instead of the litter boxes.

Toby - tuxedo. Eight years old. Silky smooth shiny coat. Has the most wonderful voice. Gets very affectionate, especially if he thinks you're going to turn the tap on for him.

Petey - Siamese. Eight years old. Toby's litter mate. Slightly cross-eyed, and his eyes wiggle. LOVES to groom human hands. Bite them, too. He is "Uncle Petey" to Skittles and Rat Face.

Daddy - tuxedo. Age unknown. The most irritating cat on earth, but can be very sweet. He must eat the food you are eating and he must eat it right now. He'll swipe it out of your hand.

Cocoa - fluffy black and white. Six-seven years old. Came to us as a stray, five weeks old. She is Mrs. V.'s special girl. Do not pet her or you will lose your hand.

Skittles - tortoiseshell. Six years old. Wild. Will allow herself to be petted only when she's on the bed, sometimes on the couch, and usually only in Uncle Petey's presence. O'Malley and Rat Face's mother.

Moose - fluffy ginger tabby. Six years old. Huge. Very affectionate, very mellow.

Smudge - fluffy solid black. Six years old. Tiny. Very affectionate but will turn on you in a flash. Likes to ambush the other kids.

(Skittles, Moose and Smudge are litter mates)

Mildred the Tame - sandy tabby. Mildred (aka Midrid) was feral and came into the house one day, and decided "hmm… warm… better food… think I'll stay." So she did. Very affectionate, but only if you're sitting down.

O'Malley - brown tabby and white. Two and a half years old. Likes to hop and dance. Warm and sweet - just don't pet her below the head when she's in your lap.

Rat Face - tuxedo. Two and a half years old. Spent this summer healing from cuts to her chest and a broken foot. A sweet little thing. Likes to be petted somewhat but don't try to pick her up - she hates it. Loves to rip and play tag.

1. My two dogs
Legend is my 12-year-old 103-pound Rottweiler. She is a big baby. She only looks formidable, but she is so totally laid back.

Honey Bear is my 1-1/2-year-old 6-1/2-pound Chihuahua. She is a real terror, and she thinks she is a Rottweiler, When she was 5 months old, she was a total wild child. So, I sent her to Man's Best Friend to puppy boot camp for 2 weeks. What I got back was an attack Chihuahua.

28. Believe it or not, they get along OK.
Actually, Legend just tolerates Honey Bear as she's too little to play with Legend. So, she just puts up with her. That is, until Honey Bear tries to sneak a bone away from Legend. Then she lets out with a great big growl and Honey Bear runs. Legend won't hurt her, but she sure knows how to scare the hell out of her.

6. Mine: a toddler, a wild-thing, and a big lizard in the living room!
Edited on Fri Oct-09-09 11:54 AM by AlienGirl
Gideon: He is usually physically on my body, though I have been working on teaching him independent play. He loves to snuggle and give kisses. His favorite entertainment is going out and meeting people (especially kids: he loves kids and will call "Hi kid!" until they notice him). In addition to his growing vocabulary in spoken language, he waves hi and shakes his head for "no." His receptive language is a lot better than his expressive language. He uses the toilet, requires elaborate bedtime rituals, loves pizza and Taco Bell bean burritos, can spot a Taco Bell sign from a moving car, won't eat greens unless they are cleverly hidden in something yummy, and his favorite shows are Spongebob, Penguins of Madagascar, and iCarly. He is about sixteen.

Gideon:

Reese: He's probably five, though we don't know for sure. He is shy and doesn't like to be touched, but he has amazing musical talent and will tell "stories" about places he's been by singing the sounds of a pasture with sheep, a cell phone, various sirens, birds, the barking dog next door, and urgent piercing calls that mean he needs a fresh bowl of water NOW because he wants a bath. He was wild until he was hit by a car, and the person who found him didn't get adequate vet care, so he has a bad wing that makes him unreleasable.

Reese:

Chaim: This is the enigmatic lizard. He likes plums a lot and will tolerate handling, but he mostly enjoys hiding under things and digging holes. I am going to have to rehome him soon, though; his claws tear me up really badly, and I am still colonized with MRSA and can't take the risk. :-( I got him when he was fourteen inches long and he's twenty-seven inches now, at almost nine months old.

Chaim:

21. Reese was hit by a car as a juvenile (still grey-feathered but flying)
One wing was badly broken and the leg on that side was partially paralyzed. The lady who found him (a pet store owner) kept him and tried to fix the injuries, but she didn't trust any of the local vets, so he never healed properly. A couple of years after she found him, I was getting some toys at her store and she told me she needed to give away a starling so that she could have more room for her cedar waxwing and other wild birds. I offered to take him.

Her waxwing and tits and native birds are not legal to keep; but starlings, city pigeons, and house sparrows are non-native invasive species and not covered by the Migratory Bird Treaty, so they're legal.

I raised an eyebrow reading the sentence about the waxwing. I wasn't worried about your starling though - I know they're ok to keep. They're also supposed to be really smart.

Must be cool to watch him up close.

40. Yeah, I disapprove of keeping releasable rehab cases in captivity
I don't have a high opinion of the pet-shop lady; not only would she keep animals who could be rehabbed and released, she also didn't provide adequate vet care (she thought all the local vets were scammers and thieves) and she had Reese on a hookbill diet that didn't provide enough protein and had too much iron and sugars.

9. My two mother and son cats
Ruby-- torbie and white. Age 3. Likes to cuddle and is a lap cat, although she's slow to warm up to strangers. She'll hide until she gets to know you. A real love bug.

Max - Age 1 (19 months). White and brown with inverted V "Spock" markings on his face and the back of his neck. Very large--16 1/2 pounds but is a big baby. So playful I call him Mad Max. Loves to play with his kitty teaser, laser pointers, and is a veritable pain in the butt, but I love him. Thanks to DUers, I was able to get his blood blister surgically repaired last month; otherwise, I would have been forced to surrender him to the shelter. He was very lethargic at that time, but now he's back to his old crazy self!!

I don't have current pix of my cats because I don't own or have access to a camera. Max was 8 months old and Ruby was 2 in these pix.

13. Summer - roughly 2-year-old Siamese/Tabby mix
Edited on Fri Oct-09-09 12:14 PM by Rob H.
She's the sweetest cat ever--she loves to sleep so that she's touching me, and since she's part Siamese she's really talkative, too.

Hanging out on my lap:

I have my right ankle over my left knee, so I'm not sure how she finds that comfortable. She does love her lap time, though. :)

Showing you her beautiful blue eyes:

She's on the lid of the clothes hamper, where she hangs out while I'm in the shower.

16. The Council of Cats
Augustus Maximus aka Gus

+- 5 year old Maine Coon mix rescued with his sister Coco. He has a very imperial attitude, hence the name. His favorite thing in the world is the ring pulled off a new jug of milk. He flies around the house carrying them making a noise a bit like the long note on a fire truck.... reeoooooooooooooooooooooow!

Coco

Sister of Gus and the most aloof of the council. She spends most of her time finding the highest place she can to nap and keep an eye on things, usually above the upper cabinets in the kitchen. I have had the crap scared out of me more than once making midnight runs into the kitchen. :)

Mini Cat

Tabby adopted with Gus and Coco, but not related. As her name suggests, she is a petite kitty, about half the size of Gus. Mini is close to two years old and loves to hate Gus. They stay within 3 feet of each other all day, everyday, but they are not remotely affectionate to each other. Gus went on a week long unsupervised adventure and Mini was very distraught the whole time he was gone. I don't know what to make of them.... odd couple.

and last, but not least:

Molly

Another Maine Coon mix little over a year old. I acquired her last year when a friend begged me to save her from the needle at the pound. (You already have three.... what's one more?) My friend rescued kitty from a family that lost interest after the baby kitten phase. Sigh. She is a very sweet kitty, but the other three don't like her at all.

I don't have any photos of the girls handy.

We just have our pretty Bella: Tri-colored Sato mix (basenji, collie, coonhound, beagle and some kind of terrier so far as we can tell). ~1.5 yrs old. Rescued at 5 mos from Puerto Rico where she was sickly, beaten and abandoned. She loves to play more than anything else in the world. She's afraid of people, thunderstorms and other loud noises. She's very (very!) vocal, likes to offer her opinion on just about everything, can be a little (little!?!) demanding and she's the smartest dog I've ever known. She's unnervingly aware of "up" - she not only watches squirrels w-a-a-a-y up in the trees, she watches planes, helicopters and hang gliders. She loves to give kisses, hugs and snuggles. She is almost always moving.

25. Here goes:

Jones (looks just like this--didn't have a pic) - She's 13. She loves to be outside. She's just as healthy and active as she ever was. She is not overly affectionate, but very friendly. She likes my husband more than she like me.

Bevy (short for Beverly) is a boy. He's 12. He used to have a twin named Elliot. (Beverly and Elliot from Dead Ringers) The each had varying degrees of birth defects. Elliot was worse and passed away a couple years ago. Bevy's health has improved since we moved to the suburbs. Bevy is cowardly, whiny, demanding and drools.

We also have 4 fish and 2 snails. My son changes their names almost every day.

27. Need more pics
I'd add my pics, but my online repository seems to have lost them. :(

Dusty: Weighing in at a slim 100 pounds, this lovely lady is a five year old lab/rottie mix. She's built like a rottie, but with the temperment of a lab. She gets a little preoccupied with seemingly everything when we go for a walk, but otherwise she's just about perfect.

Bali (deceased): My 18 year old yellow tabby who passed last year. It only takes three words to describe Bali: Best. Cat. Ever.

And coming soon...
Festus: This little guy is a semi-wild yellow tabby currently living under my friend's house. He's about 10 weeks old now, and I hope to get him in the next few days.

29. Chaucer D. Cat.
Chaucer is an only pet, and he was chosen from all the other pound kitties by my daughter. He was a little black kitten and completely mellow in spite of the insanity of the animal shelter. He meets us at the door when we come home and is a complete lap spud given half a chance. He head butts and pats gently with a paw when he wants love, and he adores his cat food. He's 17 pounds of neutered male splendor.

It is almost impossible to pack with him in the room because he LOVES to sleep on or in a suitcase:

32. Six cats, and the ghost of TommyCat, departed February 16, 2009
All are strays (Clarisse was the only one adopted out of a shelter). So ages are estimates, except for the kittens who MommaKitty brought to us when they were probably a month old.

Love them all so much :loveya: :loveya:

Elder of the Household: Clarisse, probably 12-13 years old. A cantankerous mostly white calico with calico ears, tail, and a big ole' splotch on one side. Also has persistent pupillary membrane (PPM is a condition of the eye involving remnants of a fetal membrane that persist as strands of tissue crossing the pupil). She has problems seeing, poor sweet girl. She's fierce, and has only recently begun to mellow. Loves loves LOVES my husband. She's one of the reasons we went on a second date -- Clarisse just went nuts over him when they first met, so I figured if he passed the Clarisse test (she hates most everyone) it was a good sign.

Ivan: Enormous male tuxedo, beautiful cat. Probably 6 or so. Mostly snuggly, but can get pissed off and bite/scratch (though he usually warns you, and if you persist f*cking with him, you're gonna get it). Walks like a lion. Is the only male since Tommy left, and takes his protection duties seriously. Saves kittens from trees. Comes to you when you whistle for him. I can give him whatever meds he might be prescribed so easily; the girls are terrors when it comes to pills. Big ole' lug.

Novi (aka MommaKitty): Tortoiseshell with the most incredible purr, a very very affectionate cat. Probably 5.5 years old; she was very young when she brought us her girls (first litter, the vet thought) so she's probably no more than a year older than her daughters. She brought us her three girls in May 2005. She is the sweetest cat in the world, and would love nothing more than to sit in your lap and purr all day. Demanding when she wants attention. Spayed her and her girls, and kept them all (despite a few very half-hearted attempts to find them homes - I was never satisfied with the people around here who asked to adopt). Ivan loves Novi, but is passionate about Marilyn. :)

The following three are all Novi's daughters (Marilyn (Monroe); Hedy (Lamarr) and Ingrid (Bergman):

Marilyn (aka Bimbo): 4.5 years old, a long-haired orange/blonde tabby goddess, part Maine Coon. Has the corona of fur around her head, furry toes, feathered tail, of a MC. Big cat. Looks nothing like her mother, seems to be the fraternal twin of her sister Hedy who is silver, not orange, but the exact same body, fur, etc. Bimbo is fearless, and will NOT take "no" for an answer. Ivan is in love with her; they are frequently together, he usually grooms her while she looks pleased with herself. She is a hoot. Obsessed with water. She flirts. She is a bimbo, in the best sense of the word - giggly, happy, and just not worried.

Hedy (aka Silver): 4.5 years old, a long-haired silver tabby, part Maine Coon, very big. Same corona of fur around her head, furry feets, feathery tail as her sister. Their faces are a bit different, but their body structure, etc., are identical. Looks like a silver and gold version of the same cat; I really do wonder if they are twins. Silver is the SWEETEST creature on earth, and talks a LOT (but only if you respond; she doesn't talk to talk, she talks to converse). Doesn't like Ivan's overtures. Makes sure I don't drown in the shower.

Ingrid (aka Hedy aka MiniMe): 4.5 years old, same body shape as her mother, nothing like her two sisters. Orange tabby with white bib and feet. Smallest of all the cats, and very skittish and scaredy, poor girl. But will sneak up on you and sit in your lap and purr up a storm if she feels safe. She doesn't go out anymore (the only two who do during the day are Novi and Ivan) but when she did, she was an incredibly fearless hunter - she's not afraid of other creatures, only humans. And I don't know why, we're her only exposure (aside from the vet and the cat sitter); she's just been scared her whole life. But when she was hunting, she'd bring home water rats about 3/4 the size of her own body. Tough but shy girl.

And then we lost our beloved TommyCat last February. He was my husband's before we met, but Tommy became my baby. We just clicked. I miss him so much; he had total, complete control and authority over the entire cat (and human, to be honest) population; even in his last days when he was down to 5 lbs or so, Ivan respected him. He was 17 when he died, an orange male tabby with white bib and feet (he's why we call Inga "MiniMe" - she looks a lot like him).

33. My pups
Luna - is the queen, she was here first and won't let Bean forget it. She also likes to be babyed and will close her eyes and sigh when you cuddle her.

Bean - While officially not a rescue, didn't get a good start in life. Came to us at 11 months and never having been to a vet. He is scared of people touching his ears and is skittish around strangers. His belly is nearly naked so we never know if he is shivering from cold or nervousness. He's big for an Iggie and a bit goofy. He gets very upset when we take off his bandana, had to buy a second one so we could wash it.

34. Mouse and Simba will be 14 in November. They were born in
the same house to different litters 5 days apart but have been together forever.

They are both neutered males; they play together, groom each other, sleep together. Here they
are the other day on their newest favorite spot: on my side of the bed.

Do they ever let you in on all that snuggling or do they keep it all to themselves? They look like they'd be nice fuzzy snugglies.

36. Only one beloved doggy left
We had 4 dogs, but have lost three to various illnesses (lost my very loved Bristol the day after the election to a brain aneurysm)

NEVILLE

Our soon to be 17 year old (no, that's not a typo) Old English/possibly Clydesdale mix. Got him from the pound when he was about 8 months old. Extremely hyper, a bit of an idiot savant (he lit his butt on fire twice staring at his tennis ball in front of the fireplace). Much of his life has revolved around tennis balls and herding stuffed animals. He has arthritis in his back legs and hips so he's not as mobile these days, but you've never met a happier dog. He gets carried up and down the stairs and outside. He is now convinced that he can't poop unless I'm there walking around the yard with him...this had led my hubby to name me "The Poop Whisperer". He doesn't lift his leg to tinkle anymore and would always pee on his foot, so now he gets a ziploc bag with a hair tie put on his back right foot before he pees. I hope someone's there for me to put that baggy on my foot when I'm old....LOL

41. He is tennis ball obsessed.
The first time he lit his ass on fire I was alone and nobody would believe me...I was vindicated a couple days later when he did it again. He's also been partially deaf all his life and you can look him right in the eyes and yell "Neville" and he will immediately look all around the room to see who's calling his name....LOL Once I bought him some new tennis balls and they were in one of those see-through tubes. I turned my back for a second and he grabbed the tube off the table and proceeded to carry them all over the house. Heck, he'd even put the tennis ball in his food dish while he was eating, he couldn't bear to be away from it for a second.

Oh, and we decided that we could become millionaires if we could figure out an effective delivery system to package his poop in a missile. It's got about a 5 second delay and them BAM...you want to lay down and die it smells so bad...LOL

He is one of a kind.

106. I love "The Poop Whisperer"~Dogs sure know how to get us to do their bidding!
When our Border collie-Heeler Sally waits for me to come out with the flashlight and meet her in the backyard before she comes in go to bed it's because she ambushed a roof rat on the fence, in a tree eating figs, or somewhere around the shed. Do you know how hearing a rat and staring at its last perceived location for a half an hour in the dark get one's endorphins flowing!? Sally does! She wants me to share in the excitement!
I like your ziploc galosh solution. We should all approach the indignities of ageing with a sense of humor!

38. Her name is Hope
Edited on Fri Oct-09-09 03:50 PM by TxRider
I decided I needed a new dog, my last dog was put down at 16 when her kidneys failed her. The best dog ever.

I had gone petless for years while working 24/7 starting up businesses.

I looked around on the web for hard to adopt dogs, I figured I would leave the cute ones for kids and families. I'm single and older and I can handle any dog with any behavior problem.

I came across Hope on a rescue site. She's a 3yr old German Shepherd. She was kept in a backyard breeding litters of pups, neglected and staved and close to death, ears infected and scratched until the blood vessels burst and were bags of blood, mangy, and was seized and ended up at the SPCA.

She was 3 years old, had no training, basically feral, fearful, almost dead, sick, and was to be euthanized. The no kill shelter saved her on her death day.

I adopted her from them this spring, April I think. Brought her home, fixed her up, and now she's a pretty well trained beautiful 70lb German Shepherd.

She looks scary. Big, mostly black, mostly black face. Her ears are not pointy shepherd ears anymore, they are scarred up crinkled over scar tissue mostly. At least they match on both sides.. ;) People cross the street when I'm walking her so they don't have to get close, and all she wants to do is go say hello lick them.

She's such a sweet dog. She loves people, loves little kids even toddlers, has no aggression in her at all. She has never met a dog she doesn't like and instead of sniffing butt her first act is to lick a dogs face. She even backs away when viscous little dogs like miniature dachshunds have bitten her in the face, usually with a "what is your problem?" look about her.

So now she lives the good life, top dollar dog food, almost always some of whatever I'm eating, two leather sofas to lounge on, free run of the house, a pool out back, two long walks every day and a trip to the dog park every week.

In fact she gets quite vocal and persistent about her morning and evening walk, and has learned how to use a whine, a huff, and puppy eyes to get her way. And a jump onto the bed to roust me up every morning at daybreak.

She's also come from basically feral, with a distrust people especially men (which I am) to a great leash walker, who can sit, lay down, shake hands, play dead, stop etc. when I ask her to, most of the time. She now knows all the dogs in the neighborhood, loves to meet and greet when we're out walking, and is a favorite of all the kids in the neighborhood.

I have to say I am very happy with her, I expected big behavior problems to deal with but I ended up with the sweetest natured German Shepherd I have ever known, who is smart, goofy sometimes, and very good natured and sweet and pretty much spoiled rotten now. Even though it's taken about $2000 in vet bills.

82. As of today I now have two girls
Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 08:29 PM by TxRider
A local German shepherd rescue with 400 dogs ran out of money and announced they had to close.

I went down and brought home a little girl named Monica about 40 lbs, a mix of shepherd and something that picked up as a stray last December by Animal Control, about a year old.

Sweet dog, looks like a 100% german shepherd but only half size. Very affectionate, very attentive, she's going to be a total lap dog.

I'll get her heart worms treated, get her trained up and likely find her a good new home, she's going to be a snap to train. She has already learned leash walking and how to sit at the rescue I guess, because she knows how already. Much easier than Hope who was 3 yrs old and basically feral.

I think I need to give her a new name though, not wild about Monica, or three syllable names in general, and she doesn't seem to answer to it anyway.

Hope is definitely not happy about having a new dog getting attention from me.

Monica...

Hope sharing her sofa "We are not pleased"..

44. 3 cats...

Riley, 7 years old. He's a total love-whore huggle-bunny. Obnoxious habits include wandering around the house howling until someone comes and picks him up, then wandering away to do it all over again.

Spencer, 5 years old. I'm pretty sure he was abused as a kitten, as he's horribly skittish and hates everyone but me. Has moments of huggle-bunniness though. Bad habits include pooping on the living room floor when annoyed. Which is often.

Kyra, 2 years old. Nickname: Princess Ankle-biter Fuzzybutt. I think you can see why from this picture. Doesn't like being held, as it messes up her fur. Used to suck on a blanket as though nursing, but seems to have outgrown that (alas). Bad habits: body slamming closed doors.

45. Listed oldest to youngest, almost
Cinnamon - Orange and White. Queen of the household who doesn't like most of the other cats and is
constantly wanting to be in front of the computer. It drives me crazy because she won't sit still except when my partner is on-line then she is perfectly content to lay in his lap.
--------- (Cinnamon)

Patches - She is med haired Tux. And keeps watch over all.
--------- (Patches)

Cream Puff - aka Pie, she is a cream colored, blue eyed, rag dollish cat who seems to be despised by almost all the other cats. She is long haired and get mats so easily. She gets a buzz cut in the summertime. We kidnapped her from my partners Mothers house to take her to the vet and we never returned her. She used to be such a recluse and now she is reasonably social.
--------- (Cream Puff and Kerry)

Kerry - Long haired dark gray tabby. She is the most spoiled. Named after John Kerry to console ourselves after his 2004 loss. We got her when our landlord called and said one of his other tenants abandoned a cat when they moved out and wanted to know if we wanted her.

The last batch of cats were from a outdoor kitty "Mamacat" that had kittens under our stairs for over a year and a half.

Titus - aka Titmouse - (hide your nipples hes gunning for them) He's a short haired Tux. The largest cat we have and he is annoying.

He's also a persistent licker. He gets into these "I'm going to lick you mood" and the only way to avoid it is to put the blanket over your head tightly so he can't get you or to throw him off the bed. It takes about 3 times for him to get the hint and it's not that easy because he knows how to become dead weight.

He even will put his ears back in a way that says, "I'm going to try to force my head under that blanket just so that I can lick you."
--------- (Titus Jake and Mamacat)

Lucius - One of our prettiest cats. Short haired and black?/white. He's hard to figure, a real cat.
--------- (Lucius)

Candy - Med. hair female and cute. She is in need to be spayed and soon. She likes to pee on clothes, usually mine (I'm her favorite)
--------- (Candy)

Harvey - Gray and white Long hair. He has a really beautiful face and coat. Like Lucius he can be very standoffish. I sometimes call him Possum face.
---------
Jake - Orange and white short hair. He is the drooler. It just drips from him when he is content. When you try to lift him up he twists so that you have to hold him belly up. We had given him away once but the new owner had issues with a family member having allergies so he came back. My partner dislikes him.
---------
StinkerButt - The only cat I was allowed to name. She is an awkward looking female who has spent most of her life behind the bedroom curtains. We weren't very successful taming her. We think it was because we let her out of the cage too soon.
---------

As kittens they were allowed to roam the house if they purred when picked up and held. Until then they were kept in confinement. Shes not as bad as she used to be and often will come near us until she smells our hand and then its, "Oh Hell no!"

Her favorite friend is her brother Lucius and she loves to rub against him and follow him around.
--------- (Stinkerbutt,Jake, Harvey)

Captain - Long haired Orange/white. Dumbest cat ever. My Partner tried to out cute the name StinkerButt. He came up with Captain Cuddles, shortened to "Captain" later.

He is the last kitten we caught. My Partner just scooped him up off the stairs. His favorite place to be is in front of my feet. He drools and when I'm cleaning litter boxes he insists on laying on his side in one of them which grosses me out.

He has a spaced out look on his face. I really want to like him but mostly I want to strangle him.

--------- (Jake and Captain)

Finally, after almost two years I was able to lure Mamacat into the house. She is a short haired Tortie with a scar that divides her bottom lip. She has become quite a nice house cat.

I don't think she was ever feral. I was always bothered that she had to live outside in the cold winter months. I would lay on my side on the porch and coax her to come near and with food and encouragement I got her to trust me somewhat.

She is very playful and much to my dismay she and Captain can be a Holy terror around the house when they are playing together.

(Mamacat)

I wasn't able to catch all of her Kittens. The neighbors caught one and there was one other that we caught that my Partner's Mother has.

I don't see stray cats around here anymore. A good thing. The only cat I see outside is one of the neighbor's cats.

Twelve cats I must be insane or soon will be.

(Kerry Again)

69. We would catch the kittens
and after we made sure they were healthy and litter box trained we assumed we would find homes for them. But I'm afraid I was the weak link in this chain and couldn't give them up.

I'm just glad our place is big enough for them and that not all of them want to sleep in our bed.

We wouldn't have had so many if we could have caught Mamacat sooner but she is so smart. She could go into the trap, eat the food and not step on the bar for closing the trap.

It just took my being patient and getting her to trust me that was her downfall. She seems like a really happy kitty now. And she no longer has to share a stairwell with a Possum, although they seemed to get along quite well.

Even with all these cats when we go to a pet store we always look at the cats that are up for adoption.

I have to give a lot of credit to my partner. He takes care of all the tough jobs like trimming nails and removing mats and when necessary giving meds.

And considering how wild the kittens acted when we would first catch them he is much more brave than I when handling them. They scared the crap out of me!

46. Samantha, Approx 12 years old. Female ginger (really rare). Aloof. Hates to be
held. Likes to me in the centre of a room full of people. Adores my dad. He 'borrowed' her from me as I was moving to Halifax and never gave her back. She is still mine as I see her every day (taking care of ageing parents in my new job).

Monster: Tuxedo big male, 11 years old approx, he was fixed at the age of two when I rescued him from a vets office. He occassionally attacks when he gets angry but is mostly a lap cat. Curls up in my arms every night at bedtime. Boss of the house.

Twilight: Black cat. Small female. Approx 4 years old. Hates other cats (except for Monster and Sam). Loves to get into bed with me and kneads. Hates to be alone (will cry out if she is the only one in a room or at least she used to).

55. Meet the hordes - again
:D

Plato: 8.5 years old, white and tabby, 18 lbs. Aloof unless he wants something. Will stab you in the leg when he does. Please blow softly on his nose so he can smell what you just ate. Sleeps on his tummy, laid out with his arms and legs stretched out like Superman. Will break your nose with his head butts if you're not careful. Evie and Socrates' brother.

Socrates: 8.5 years old, gray with white tummy and feet, 25 lbs. Big and cuddly. Snores to beat the band. Blesses people by gently touching their face with his hand. Washes the other cats even when they don't need it. Best road block ever, sleeps where he thinks you'll step next. Likes to open and sleep in the hall closet. Thwacks his tail really loudly when he's snoozing.

Evie: 8.5 years old, pitch black, 13 lbs. None more black. Owns the bed. Bangs the water dishes in the morning when the breakfast service is too slow. Will get her brothers in trouble, then split. Has the most terrifying screech on the face of the Urp. Seriously pointy, but will let you clip her claws when she's in a good mood. Gravitationally challenged, uses up and down interchangeable.

Quark: 7 years old, white with blue eyes, 14 lbs. The most mellow cat evah. Starts purring just looking at you. Air kneads compulsively. Barred from the bedroom because of too many, er, accidents trying to win the bed back from Evie. The softiest cat on the planet. Actually prefers kibble to wet food. Owns the window sill in my office. Speaks dog, will squeak and bark rather than meow. Neutrino's brother.

Neutrino: 7 years old, white with one blue eye and one green eye, 7 lbs. Sleeps in really weird places and never falls off (like the back of the futon). Owns the living room chair. Used to live in the coffee table after one too many baths from Socrates. Can run from one end of the apartment to the other without ever touching the floor. Loves roasted chicken.

57. My Gang of Fur:
Here's Milo -- A big 15-lb. bundle of white and orange fur. He's six, a shelter cat; very friendly, comfort-loving, loves his heated cat bed (which is HIS alone and cannot be used by the other cats); steals food right off my fork (especially ham and bacon); wakes me up in the middle of the night so we can play with his favorite toy, a dangling piece of colored yarn.

And Jeoffry, a three-year-old shelter cat -- a graceful, lanky gray tabby with a very loud voice and the interesting habit of licking exposed human flesh. And licking and licking and licking. I'm not sure whether he likes me or he's tasting me. He's a little neurotic and needy, and he sleeps with me every night, right behind my knees.

Here's Pixie, who is a cute, fluffy little thing. She's an ex-farm cat, but with her blue eyes and partial points she seems to be part Siamese. She dominates the boyz, hisses when she doesn't get her way, and generally gets she wants. She's a diva.

When you post photos of your kittys' name tags, you might want to black out your phone number. You never know who might get a hold of it...

BTW, Pixie is GORGEOUS!!! (As are your other kitties.) I have never seen markings like that on a cat before. Love that brown and black nose! She reminds me a little bit of a lynx.

64. My Ninja is an only child...
... and he's quite happy to keep it that way.

That's his glamour shot, here's what he looks like most of the time:

He is about nine years old now, purebred Flame Point Himalayan that some people from California bought, declawed (boo!), neutered (yay!), spoiled rotten, then got bored with and bought a puppy, who they didn't teach to respect the cat. Cat couldn't defend himself. Not only that, but apparently even though they had the money to buy a purebred kitten they didn't have enough money to take him to the vet, he developed bladder stones. They surrendered him to a shelter because he was pissing everywhere.

I adopted him from the no-kill shelter he ended up at -- most of the time cats with urinary issues are put down when they enter the shelter system, but he was so handsome and so sweet that people decided to try to get him into a no-kill shelter. He ended up having to have PU surgery, but he's nearly six months out from the surgery and a very happy, healthy cat now.

He is an adorable sweet purring lump of fur who spends most of his time asleep on either me or my pillows when I'm home, and adores his window perch and cat tree. He does NOT like other cats, though, and will hiss and growl and bow up like a fighter when he sees one through the glass. He's terrified of men, and even my ex sometimes would make him run if he walked too fast or was too loud walking across the house. He managed to actually hide inside the walls of our old house when the cleaning lady came -- hence how he got his name.

The worst problem he has is that he sheds. Everywhere. On everything. I own nothing truly black now, it all has cat hairs in it, even after washing.

65. Five dogs
Edited on Sat Oct-10-09 09:36 AM by hobbit709
Down from the eight we had at one time.

Sweetie Pie The Snuggle Puppy, she's about 17-the vet guessed she was about 2 when Donna rescued her from the Drag where she was hanging out. Part retriever, part ?. 80lbs of sweetness, wants everyone she meets to think she never had a moment's affection until she saw you.

Boogie, Queen Of The Doofii. she's 17, mostly smooth collie. Scared of her own shadow at times, but actually quite intelligent. Loves to get her butt scritched and will push it into your hand until you do.

Rusty-our 16 year old 3-legged gimp dog. We call him a cowdog. He got out one night and got hit in the street during a rainstorm so now he's afraid of thunder. He can still outrun me on 3 legs. He's a great watchdog, alerts us if anybody even thinks of coming up the drive or sidewalk.

Jake-Rusty's brother. The original Don't Touch The Butt Dog. Totally different personality than Rusty

Wheezie aka Devious And Conniving Little Weasel or Weasel Queen Of The Universe. A Rat Terror, shes 7½ and thinks she rules the world. Her favorite words are ride and cheese.

And the ones that have gone over the Bridge
Beebop-bestest dog ever. She had the sweetest disposition and loved everyone

BB The Moose Dog-He was my baby. A lab-chow mix but if he got near water he was ALL lab

Boo- Our Aussie. I got her as a Valentine's Day present for Donna, but there was no doubt that she was MY dog

Hank. He was Jake and Rusty's brother. He loved to eat chicken-if your plate was unguarded for 2 seconds the chicken was gone and he was out the door with the bird.

70. Two kitties
Frazier - Black and white with a dirty, black nose. He turned 15 back in July. He's about as active as can be expected for an asthmatic, arthritic, geriatric cat, and is quite the chow hound, although not as much as when he was younger. He's a bit stand-offish with strangers, but won't run away when he sees one. He's a Mama's boy.

Pepper - Eight years old. Black with a dime-sized patch of white on her throat, and another between her back legs. She also has white streaks in her "arm pits". She looks like a hairy bowling ball with legs. And, I am afraid she has Daddy beat for being the "most irritating cat on earth". She is constantly in my face, no matter where I am. She affectionate to the point of being annoying at times. On top of that, she meows incessantly to go outside. She'll run and hide from strangers, but once she realizes you are okay, she's your best friend. At the vet's she'll whine and complain--while giving the vet head butts. What a weirdo! I tell her that I understand why she got dumped in the country as a kitten. The person who rescued her says that she's just really grateful that I gave her a home.

72. Only two now
Edited on Sat Oct-10-09 07:51 PM by Blue_In_AK
since Jax went to doggie heaven a few days ago.

We have Yuuko, the shih-tzu, whose birthday is unforgettable -- 4/20/09 :smoke:

and the last cat standing, Sugar, who is about 14, I believe.

on edit -- oh, you wanted personalities, too? Yuuko is a puppy, not much else needs to be said. Rambunctious as can be, loves to terrorize the cat. Sugar is very loving and VERY patient. She'll even let the puppy give her tongue baths, but she doesn't like being chased and will hiss and stand her ground. I think they will end up being good friends once the puppy settles down a little.

80. Thank you, Bertha.
He was quite old, only had one eye that he couldn't see out of very well (he lost the other one to fire ants in Texas), no teeth, tumors on his butt, and he was starting to lose his hearing. All he did was sleep most of the day. It was a hard decision, but we finally decided that he really wasn't having much quality of life at this point, so we let him go. It's the sad part about owning pets.

Here he is with my mother-in-law who also passed away in August. It's been a hard year for my husband.

73. BabyCat

Age: Three years old, plus or minus a few months. The lady who gave her to me found her wandering around her place in the summer of '07, and I think she was close to a year then. At least, she's gotten bigger since I've had her.

Personality: At times clingy and needy, other times tries to attack (but I think she just wants to play). Letting her go outside on the balcony for short periods of time has really helped her moodiness, which is why I bought the cat door for her.

74. The wee beasties
The girls are both around eight or nine. Brianna was a shelter baby. Pippy was owned by my wife's "little" when she was a Big brother/Big Sister volunteer (her family moved to a no-pets apartment).

This is Pip. She was officially diagnosed as "feisty" by her vet. She's a feline Dustin Pedroia, small but full of swagger and catitude. Don't be fooled, though. She's a little sweetie underneath it all. It's just that she chooses to show that side at 4:30 in the morning.

Here's Brianna. She's part Maine Coon, and has the personality to go with the fuzz and the long legs. Bri is a Daddy's Girl. She hangs out with me and occasionally starts a conversation with that chirpy little voice. She's a snuggler and a burrower, and loves attention almost as much as she loves cheese.

Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 12:17 AM by bluesbassman
Whoops! Edit to add personalities.

Mowgli. 13 weeks old - Very rambunctious, but sweet and cuddly.

He joins:

Maui and Leo. Maui is the most patient dog I've ever had as the picture shows. Leo is moody, but generally pleasant. Like to head butt me in the morning to let me know it's time to get up and feed his 16lb bulk.

Saydee. Very sweet and affectionate, particularly at night.

Fred. A work in progress. He was abandoned and we adopted him. Still pretty aggressive with the other cats, but getting better all the time.

104. Yeah, he's definitely one black cat.
He belonged to a relative that passed away. In the aftermath, Fred was not well cared for and got a little anti-social and malnourished. He's been pretty good with people, but still is a little testy with the other cats.

Leo and Saydee are brother and sister. They were found abandoned on a steam grate in the City and rescued. We couldn't break them up, so we adopted both of them.

83. My dog Gordon (he's a Goldendoodle - half Poodle, half Golden Retriever)
Edited on Mon Oct-12-09 03:37 PM by mvd
Gordon is 1 year and 7 months old. He's sweet, cute, intelligent and alert, lovable, outgoing, funny, great with people and dogs, playful, and mischievous. He's not destructive and is good with big things like bathroom habits, but he still puts lots of things in his mouth given the opportunity (especially Kleenex and paper products) and gets mouthy when he's energetic and playful. He's getting better with obedience, though a little spirit is good. He shows his affection not by licking your face but by going on your lap, wanting belly scratches, and encouraging you to pet him.

Madimi - black-and-orange tortoiseshell mutt moggie, about 4 years old, give or take. (I adopted her from a shelter, I'm not really sure.)

Personality: Split. Either the shnuggliest, nuzzliest, limpest, laziest, purriest, silkiest nap-pillow ever, or a completely demonic ankle-swiping randomly-leaping/climbing/jumping/pouncing/stalking meth-head ass-goblin. The change can happen in a matter of seconds.

98. Ion and Pritika (Priti)
Edited on Mon Oct-12-09 11:43 PM by GirlinContempt
Ion is 11, Priti is just over a year old. (Pritika is an Indian name meaning Beloved One) Ion is super sweet, docile and incredibly loyal (to me at least). Priti still has a bit of the kitten about her, but she's a total doll, affectionate and friendly. She is in *LOVE* with Ion, she worships him like a god, imitates his every move and bows to his holiness daily. Surprisingly, they get along amazingly well together. I say surprisingly, because Ion was *my* baby for so long, he had me all to himself and was very possessive of my time and attention. But, they love each other, and both follow me everywhere, or even just with their eyes while cuddling each other. Priti loves to sleep under the covers with me, mostly totally under, but sometimes during the night she'll creep up so her head is out and on the pillow next to mine.

The pictures of the two of them together are so cute it'll make you squirm.

Here is the album of Priti & Ion: BFF http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=120867&id=528292456&l=de46d35fa2 It's truly worth a look, they're so sweet.
And here are some single pics: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=38848&id=528292456&l=e3254e60e7 including pics of the now-deceased Flash, and Annie both 'family' cats, and some cats I have fostered through the humane society. Priti was a foster, and as a tiny kitten she would climb a 6 foot high barrier just to get in the other rooms away from her family to be with Ion and I. She became so attached so fast, I couldn't let her go. She actually looked at me as more of her mother than her birth mother who was in my care at the same time.
