Can someone please explain VA categories for me?
Just heard from a veteran friend that he's been given 'category 5'. That's all he said about it, but he seemed relieved; he's been hurting badly for some time and has had no money to see a doctor. What will this mean for him?

And thanks for explaining.

1. It means they'll take care of him.
There is a pecking order. Here is a really, really brief explanation. http://veteransunited.org/vacategories.htm

There are several bottom lines. One of them is that the lower your priority number (1 is far better off than 6), the better off you are with regard to the VA. But once you are "in the door" they treat everyone pretty much the same. Five gets him in the door. Capiche?

Like any large bureaucracy, the VA has all kinds of regulations. Fortunately there are people who are conversant with them. If you have questions, the best answer I can give you is to seek out a counselor at one of the service organizations (VFW, American Legion, DAV, AMVETS, and so on). In Florida, at least, many county governments also have people on staff who are conversant with VA programs.
