22. It's easy for me to say fuck Black Friday...I'm stone broke...BUT... |
|
...my attorney invited me to have Thanksgiving dinner with his family this year.
His wife is a great cook...she's Sicilian, my family is from Naples, and the one thing we have in common is a LOVE for COOKING.
We open our homes to the people we love, our friends, and we show our love in our kitchens.
She's VERY PARTICULAR about sauce...as are most Italians...but she has told me that she loves MY homemade sauce.
So when I go to their home on Thanksgiving, I have no money for a fine bottle of wine, but I have a can of imported San Marzano tomatoes in my cupboard, and I will bring her a batch of my homemade sauce that she can freeze and use on a day when she wants real, authentic home-cooked taste...and is too busy to make it.
That, for me, is the "spirit of the season"...what it is supposed to be all about.
I do feel bad about the store owners who are depending on "Black Friday" revenue. I think that this year they will be among the first to feel the deepest sting of "Wall Street Bailout" versus "Main Street Recovery" actually means.

plan on staying home with no television on and no access to news at all so that I can avoid what I call "Insignificant Bullshit Saturday," during which almost all of the media coverage is about shopping trends. Invariably, there will be interviews with random assholes telling us about how much of their shopping that they've done, how they're economizing and so on.
There is ALWAYS something more interesting than to report, and I don't give a fuck about what other people are shopping for or how they're doing it.
Few things piss me off more than media coverage on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

I'll be driving out to my stepdaughter's house so that my daughter can meet and get to know my stepdaughter's soon-to-be niece. The step is getting married on Saturday and my 7 year old and her fiance's 3 year old niece are the flower girls. I am not looking forward to this wedding. Basically I want to get in, see the step married, take some photos of my daughter in her flower girl dress and get out. The soon to be step's in-laws are a bunch of right-wingers from Pittsburgh. Last year they were all sporting "Nobama" pins and telling everyone in earshot that Obama was an "Islamic" and hadn't even been born in the US. Yep - birthers. Oh joy. Wish me luck that my husband doesn't punch one of these idiots out.

I'm not a big fan of crowds but I even shopped last year on the day after Thanksgiving and it was my birthday. The 5 computers per store type of deals aren't worth waiting for since you probably won't get it but sometimes you really can get good deals. I participate in a few Christmas grabs so I'm usually able to get more for my dollar limit that day as well as save money on other gifts too. I'll probably pick up a couple of things for myself since I could use some winter clothes.
