1. I know for a fact I am not the only one, people! |

For the record, my name comes from a small but not-insignificant river on the eastern edge of the Shire. (It's in an important scene in the 'Fellowship of the Ring' book; skipped over completely in the movie.)

Tolkien went through many years of wrangling, ethically speaking, about the state of Orcs in his letters. Trying to reconcile his Catholic faith with the idea of a race of beings basically created to be nothing more but low-level literary bad guys. Yet, as a writer, in all the scenes where Orcs are alone together, he couldn't help but to write them as *characters,* with distinct voices and motivations.
Oops, can't square that with a race of beings created to be mindless and damned cannon fodder.
*WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP MELTDOWN DOES NOT COMPUTE!**
And he always realized he had painted himself into a moral corner. So I respect him, whereas I don't respect the writers who blithely wrote allegories with cardboard cut-out representations of ideas and never lost any sleep over the implications.
