Okay, ONE thing M$ apparently got right with Vista... |
|
ReadyBoost seems to work.
Radio Shack had a 4GB SDHC card on sale for $13. I thought, "WTF?" I put it in my laptop, which was getting REALLY slow, and believe it or not the thing actually did get faster. Coming out of sleep mode doesn't take three minutes now - more like four seconds. The damn ReadyBoost actually works! Go figure.

2. Unfortunately, it maxes out at 2GB - it is 3 1/2 years old, mind you. |

Still, the meter seldom gets above 55% usage on memory. Vista doesn't use system memory efficiently as a cache (if at all), but curiously it DOES use an SD card as a cache with ReadyBoost. Go fucking figure - never mind - that's M$ for you.
I love this laptop - 17" with a numeric keypad (HP), but I checked with HP and the motherboard won't handle more than 2GB of system memory. It is however heavier than one of Dolly Parton's tits. "Portable" might be a better description than "laptop", but it gets the job done. I've also got an HP mini (10.2") with a SSD and double battery running Linux MI (HP shipped it that way) and it gets about 7 1/2 hours out of one charge. THAT is the one I carry around as it hardly weighs anything. Cool little box too - you open the lid and it is just ready. No waiting.
