1. You'll be fine.
The first few weeks of being a born-again nonsmoker suck, but life becomes so much better when you're no longer chained to nicotine addiction.

3. I used the patch.
If you smoke a lot, then the patch isn't going to be delivering as much nicotine as your body is used to, so there will still be some physical withdrawal. Think of it as Cold Turkey Lite.

4. The best gift you can give yourself is, not smoking. Look at it that
way, and it makes it easier.

5. Missy: Save the money you would have spent on cigarettes for the first year
and buy yourself a great present.

You can do it - I did it, you certainly can.

6. That's my biggest incentive. 10 cartons a month is VERY expensive!

12. My therapist gave me a great idea.
Every day you don't smoke, write yourself an IOU for the cost of a pack (assuming you smoked a pack a day) and put the IOUs in a jar. It's a real incentive see the notes build up, then use the money to treat yourself.

Another thing you'll notice: You'll sleep better and wake up feeling much better.

Hang in there. It's worth the effort.

7. Best wishes to you!
It is a great choice to quit and it will be so nice to have that ball and chain around your ankle gone :)

8. My doctor told me that it was ok to put the patch on and chew the nicotine gum
too. I also went to Nicotine Anonymous and that really helped. And there is quitnet.com

One of the biggest things that helped is not making it such a big deal to have cravings. I just thought of them as a feeling. I really believe that the tobacco companies are behind the, "It's worse than heroin to quit" bullshit. We've been told that all our lives and so of course when we quit it becomes true. But you can change you mind about it. (years ago I quit one time by telling myself it was just like giving up spaghetti. I liked spaghetti but I did not need spaghetti)

I also read this book: "The easy way to quit smoking" On Amazon it has 557 reviews and a 5 star rating.

http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Way-Stop-Smoking-Non-Smokers/dp/1402718616

It feel so good to be a non-smoker. You'll love it.

10. Wishing you success Lil Missy,
and a smooth transition to being nicotine free.

I will be traveling the same road as you starting Dec 8th, again....
This time I am going to try the support of acupuncture to help me along.

Please keep us posted, and know that you are not alone. (((hugs to you)))

11. Congratulations on your
decision to quit smoking. That is half the battle.

Quitting as you know is difficult, but I know you can do it.

Wishing you success and please let us know how you are doing.

If you need encouragement, this is the place! Many of us are former smokers, so we know what you are going through.

13. I quit smoking last April 2nd
with help of electronic cigarettes so it's been 8 months. I feel so much better. Sinus infection, coughs, wheezing, snoring..have gone away! Also I thought I had GERD, but when I stopped smoking a traditional cigarette, that, too went away.

 Good luck to you.

14. Good luck to you, Lil Missy
I quit about 20 months ago after trying to quit and failing several times. I used the gum and one of the things I told myself was that I would never have "just one" because that's what I did in the past and of course failed. It feels great not to smoke now and food tastes so much better.

16. I'm almost to three months quit.
I also did it with Wellbutrin (well, a generic version). I had planned a quit date, but after about 2 weeks on the pills - ten days before my planned date - I just stopped wanting/needing a cigarette. I smoked four cigarettes that day, mostly out of habit (normally a pack a day smoker); the next day I smoked one cigarette in the morning and one at night; the next day a single cigarette; the next day none.

I carried a pack of cigarettes with me for almost two week for a psychological boost - I told myself that if I really, really wanted a cigarette, I could have one. Never opened that pack, and finally threw it away.

I know that Wellbutrin doesn't help everyone, but I hope that you have as good of luck as I did, and can kick the habit.:hi:

17. I noticed too that I haven't enjoyed them as much.
I would often light one up, take a couple drags, then put it out.

So far today I'm okay, just having a sticky, dry feeling in my mouth.

18. Good, sounds like it's working.
One of the things I didn't like about smoking was the way the smell clung to me, so one incentive I used was to get some good smelling soaps and shower gels and spritzers...it was nice smell those things rather than stale smoke.

20. I used to take Wellbutrin--bad side effects
Edited on Fri Dec-04-09 09:20 AM by meow2u3
It caused me to get this ravenous appetite and balloon to 300 pounds. I stopped taking it because of that. I since, in the span of 3 years, lost 75 pounds, half of the weight I wanted to lose.

I don't know about you, but I will never take that crap again. It's not for me. I might want to try Chantix--or Commit lozenges. My doctor told me to quit smoking because I have COPD, but I'm scared to quit for 2 reasons: weight gain and bitchy nicotine fits!
