Weird question: does anyone here speak Russian? |
|
If so, can you translate something for me?
"Antoshka, pashlee kapat kartoshkoo."

1. No, but I know someone that does. |
|
If no one else here comes to your rescue, I'll ask my friend later today (if he's at the cafe he works at) and see what he says :)
Is that a phonetic spelling?

I don't think I can get it in actual Russian letters.
Thanks! :)

3. Yes, Cyrillic is a tough alphabet |
|
:)
The guy's name is Igor, too, but I don't think he's seen Young Frankenstein yet, so that bit of teasing goes over his head ;)

Now I have to figure out why a friend of mine emailed that to me...

8. Assuming you heard this and did the best at spelling it in English,... |
|

It has been a while since I studied it, well actually more than 20 years, but here are some possibilities.
Antoshka is probably a name (female).
pashlee is confusing. There are several similar words but none I know of with an "l" in that place.
kapat can mean to spill something in small quantities (such as drops) and it can also mean to slander, but it is in the infinitive form.
Kartoshkoo could be a number of things, but the ending doesn't make sense in the context. Possible meanings are a photograph, cards, or possibly even a large nose. It all depends on how it is actually spelled.
Russian really doesn't translate well into English letters. Having the Cyrillic spelling would make it a lot easier. Is there a context to the quote?
On Edit:
Okay, post 5 makes sense - "Tony, lets go pick potatoes". Man am I rusty.
On Second Edit:
That reminds me of an old Bloom County where they hack into Pravda and change the headline to "Gorbachev Urges Disarmament, Total, Unilateral" and the last panel is a couple (obviously Russian) reading, "Gorbachev Sings Tractors, Turnips, Buttocks".

11. The endings really threw me. |
|
I thought potatoes had an "n" sound near the end. Keeping up with Russian hasn't been a real high priority in the last 20 years.
