Snow. Houston. And not just a few flurries, either. Could get 1"-4" on the ground.

2. Zoinks!
And here in western NY, land of the 8 ft. snowdrifts, it's balmy, breezy, and 47 degrees. Except for a couple of driftings overnight, we've only had rain. This is phked up for sure.

3. I loved watching the snow from my 30th floor office in NYC
Of course, in NYC snow is an expected part of winter.

Not so much in Houston.

Enjoy the view!

4. Do me a favor ...

Tell me when the demolition derby starts. I want good seats.

Traffic out on I-10 this morning was stupid, not bad, but stupid. People either going 70 or 30. Meh.

5. 290 was normal, but that was at 6:15 before the snow.
Streets are still wet, no freezing, no accumulation. Yet.

7. I was watching the weather channel last night and was surprised. Weather guy said could be even more
in some areas if the storm picks up moisture from the gulf.

I don't think we've even had flurries yet.

How do Houstonians deal with driving in the snow? Even with us having considerable snow, the first snowfall is always crazy, it's like people forget how to drive in snow.

8. I lived in Denver for 10 years (the 80s) and I remember the driving jitters on the first snow day
Edited on Fri Dec-04-09 10:31 AM by Richardo
No idea how the Houstonians will handle it, but if rain experience is any indicator, I'm going to predict "badly". :)

10. I still get jittery.
No so much on the highways but these country roads can be crazy with people doing their normal speeding, especially around the roads with ditches and sharp curves.

I can still see the car full of kids coming sideways at us around a curve. Luckily they only hit a mailbox and missed us and the river.

Hope all goes well for you on your way home. Maybe it'll be melted by then?

But it is wet, and supposed to keep getting colder. Thanks for the wishes. :hi:

15. Badly is an understatement ...

There were flurries last year, and you'd think a ski resort just opened. It was here and gone in two hours, and I mostly slept through it, but before it started spitting snow, people were in the grocery stores stocking up like a hurricane was coming.

I'm trying to figure out some way to get out of here before 5. I don't mind the snow, but I do not want to deal with rush hour and snow in Houston at the same time.

18. I think people drive poorly during the first snow because there are some unique conditions:
1. No salt build-up on the roads yet, so the bridge decks are glazed.

2. The ground is warm enough to melt the first flakes which may remain melted during the day but freeze up at night.

2. The first snow tends to be warm, so it is wet and heavy and it turns to an icy sheet covered by slush very quickly, giving you the experience of hydroplaning on ice! Later snows are cold and drier and more typically a visibility problem.

It used to be said that the Eskimos had 100 words for snow. People in the Lake Effect areas have a thousand, some of which are actually printable.

16. Ah the signs of the season. Over-sized pickups and suv's going 90mph
on sheets of ice.

But I hope it warms up enough to burn off soon. People who aren't up to winter driving shouldn't drive on snowy/icy roads.

17. Oh, no!
When I was there, long ago, Houston drivers scared the crap outta me (I'm not a seasoned big city driver). I don't even want to think about your freeways when they're covered with snow. :scared:

19. A story from my childhood in Houston
I became sick with rubella when I was in kindergarten.
While I was sick, Houston got 6" of snow on Valentine's
Day. Since I had rubella, the windows in my room had to
be blacked out and I wasn't allowed to look at the snow.
My dad went outside and brought me a handful of snow
so I could see it. Then he rubbed some on my forehead
to help bring down my fever.

As long as I lived there, that was the only snow we got.

26. Last time I remember snow in Texas was 1985 San Antonio
I was 5 and there was snow everywhere. We were building snow men and having snowball fights and such. That was the last time we ever got anythng more than snow flurries.

29. I was thinking the same thing today
from the way people are driving. It's either the apocalypse in their minds or they're thinking that the snow is freezing upon impact and making things instantly icy. Of course, it's only rainy-wet on the streets with plenty of puddles and runoff, yet they are treating it worse than rain.

Later tonight my fellow Houstonians, when the temps drop and there's less traffic on the roads, then you can panic ;)
