|
We've taken to letting the house go cold overnight and using an electric blanket on the bed.
I'm not sure if the physicis of heat exchange make this favorable or not. My feet sure don't like cold floors in the am.

But I'm dealing with it pretty well so far. Got lotsa firewood stacked and ready to use and I have some really warm fleece lined leather booties-
Plus, thinking of the money I'm saving makes it not so bad!

I have space heaters in the bedroom and bathroom, but try to use them sparingly.
The best thing we have is the heated mattress pad my MIL gave us for Christmas. That with the flannel sheets keep the bed toast warm and I let the thermostat go down really low at night. I have it programmed to kick on in the morning for an hour so everybody can get ready for the day.

24. 65 and I use really nice space heater for the rooms where I do need some heat |
|
the problem with my heat is that I can't just heat certain rooms that I use regularly. Either I heat the whole house or the whole house goes cold.
So this year I'm setting my temperature at 65 degrees and I bought a few electric space heaters so I can warm up the 3 rooms I use the most (Living Room, Bathroom & Bedroom). Even then I only use the heaters when I'm in those rooms.
I'm hoping this cuts down my heating bill for 2009-2010

Brick with plaster walls and no insulation in between. You can literally feel the cold seeping through the walls. When we have money to repaint, I recall seeing a special paint with insulation properties that I'll look into.
We have OK windows, but have started using the plastic window treatments as well. It really has helped. You can pick up a couple of kits under $20. They improved quite a bit and don't look too bad. Also, check around the door frame and make sure you can't see any light of feel air.

It will not be going higher than that unless it gets very much under freezing. I only want it up just enough that I don't freeze to death in my sleep, or that the pipes won't freeze. Whichever comes first.

Coastal norcal. Mostly I don't need the furnace at all. Occasionally I turn it ON in the early morning to warm the house if it's cold-- I like it pretty chilly, so too cold usually means 50 F or below, indoors. I just turn it off after 15 or 20 minutes when the house warms up a little. Otherwise, I just build a fire in the wood stove. It never freezes here, so I don't use any heat at all unless I'm home or at night.

53. I normally keep it under 70 degrees, even when it's cold outside. |
|
Just now it was set at 65, but I had it set above that this morning. I turn it down as far as it will go at night--I sleep with two warm dogs and a down comforter--and I turn it way down when I go to work in the morning (the dogs can curl up together on my bed for warmth).
It's in the 20s outside now (24?), but my small dive is still warm from when I set the thermostat at 68 for awhile during the day.
I'm over fifty and getting more sensitive to cold, but since I was raised with people who often said, "Put on a sweater!", I figure I'm still doing well. ;-)
I only complain when my hands and feet get cold, and this is probably due to bad circulation.
So, prolesunited, get out that long underwear and put on a sweater! ;-)

*because my aunt gets cold and will not stop nagging until I turn it up. She would have it at 78 or higher, if I did not purposely pretend to turn it up. I have found that 73 calms her down some. I have to run a fan to keep my computer (and me) from being too hot. I don't want to keep it that high or waste extra energy running the fans, but she's impossible to live with unless I at least take it to 73.
If I had my say, it would be set at around 65. I don't like anything over 65 anyhow.

|
to heat the entire house, only turned the gas furnace on for about 15 minutes back in October, just to make sure it was still working well.
The pellet stove produces a very pleasant heat, keeps us warm enough for tee shirts when the outside temp is in the high 20's. It is a great product made in CANADA!! ( it's an Enviro Empress )
See, I do give Canada credit for the good things they do...but Rush still sucks.

cuz I keep my bedroom door shut to keep the dogs from wandering around at night and by the middle of the night the room is way too stuffy/warm at 73.
It's 31 outside now, and with the ever present Texas windchill that would equal a "feels like" mid 20's.

We live in S. Texas, so it's usually not much less than 40 outside, anyway. Yesterday, it was in the 30s, with a strong north wind, all day long. It got down to 49 in the house last night, but it's already back to 53 today. It doesn't stay cold for more than a couple of days here. The last time it got below 30 here was Christmas 2004.
