and just because there's not equity in some professions(male performers/athletes(a subset of 'performer') almost always command higher salaries and larger audiences)- it's not indicative of the society at large. (you DO realize that "All those foul-mouthed shock jocks' are just performers playing a part, right? and generally a fairly well-paid part. kinda obvious(well...to most) that IS what they became when they 'grew up')

in the country i live in-(u.s.a.) the onus is on the male to get their act together & be the 'breadwinner' for the family.it's okay to 'blow off steam' and goof around while you're in high school or college- as long as you get your act together and 'man up' once school is out. women as a general rule just don't have the same type of societal expectations thrust upon them, career-wise.

34. In the country I live in - the u. s. of a. - those pressures have been history for some time.

Do you realize that young men live at home longer than women? Male children - especially when there is no man in the house - are seen as protection. Folks are sexist and it still doesn't occur to them that daughters can do things like take out the garbage or mow the lawn, so the utility of having a male child home lasts much longer.

Those pressures on men to be the breadwinner are still there, but are not nearly so strong or suffocating as they once were. It sounds as though you were reared to be responsible. Most the folks I know got that from being drafted.

But look at all the adult men and what they spend on watching sports, playing sports, computer games, etc. compared to the women. We know that FDR had the hobbies of stamp collecting, hunting trips, sailing trips, book collecting, golf, etc. what were Eleanor's hobbies? Oh, that's right, she stayed home with the kids while he was on hunting, sailing or golfing trips. How many men do you know that are golf widowers? What's the percentage of female golfers at clubs near you?

Men are permitted to 'play' longer than women are.

Ha Ha...actually my Sis is a 56 year old woman with the sensibilities of a 14 year old boy. She loves SF and Star Wars and all things geek. She gave me an R2D2 for my b'day 3 years ago. Paid 100 dollars for it--I told her she could've used that for a spa certificate!!!

But I don't really have a leg to stand on: I'm as immature as you get at 55! I still ride my bike and love to play outside, I'm still as edgy and ADD as I was when I was in 5th grade.

28. I'm might get attacked for saying this but

I'm 30 and I feel like I have too much maturity because of a string of problems I've had to learn to overcome. I have had several people who know me in real life all say the same thing, that they feel I have more real world common sense than anyone else they know. I miss not taking myself and my life seriously. I don't think I've done that as a lifestyle since I was 15. I remember back when I was 23-24 and I would post on another message board, people would be surprised by my age. Several people thought I was in my 40s back when I was 24.

I'm just saying its not all its cracked up to be. Maturity seems to come from events that force you to question your assumptions about yourself and life, to adapt to setbacks and reevaluate everything.
