Am I an asshole for not wanting to be treated like a circus freak?
I'm sick of all the people here, even the ones who apparently like gay people, making a big deal out of it when I mention my girlfriend.

They'll pause, give me a weird sideways look, make sure they heard right, and say something like "oh, good for you!"

This happens every fucking time.

I told a straight friend of mine that it's getting on my nerves, and he basically scolded me for not understanding that not the whole country has the social values of the gay village of Toronto.

I want to go home, where dating someone of the same sex is no big deal.

1. Of course you aren't.
Your friend has a point though -- there are still a lot of people out there who are surprised or uncomfortable when presented with a same sex couple. The upside is the more people like you that they meet, the less surprised they will become.

8. You can't be serious.
Please tell me that you don't believe that the impetus is on a gay/lesbian student to relocate an entire life and education because other people at the preferred college are uncomfortable with homosexuality.

Pretty, pretty please.

9. no...
it would be because they are uncomfortable with other people being uncomfortable with homosexuality.

the op was the one who said that they wanted to go home- i was pointing out that it's well within her power to do so..changing other people's deeply held beliefs on the othr hand, probably isn't...

11. Actually it is within your power to at least help people confront their prejudices.
It's not easy, as the OP is discovering. But certainly we can agree that people have the ability to change, grow, improve, and enlighten their viewpoints.

5. I'd like to make a request.
Would you cross post this to GLBT Forum (or somewhere) so I can K&R it?

I couldn't agree with you more.

10. I used to get the same treatment for being a male single parent.
I'm probably guilty of doing that a few times myself; I'm mostly just covering for my own sense of surprise at a decidedly unsurprising demographic accident. Next week, when Houston elects its first gay mayor, I'll let you say 'Oh good for you' to me and maybe that'll give you a feeling of retribution. ;)
