My original number was thirteen: 1101
I jumbled the digits to get seven: 0111
When I subtracted, I got six: 0110
So I circled one of the ones and then entered four: 100
Fido thought the number I circled was eight

is maybe your battery dying? When my old calculator started to give out, its display did funny things like yours too
