John Lennon Was Shot Tonight..........
Edited on Tue Dec-08-09 08:20 AM by josephT
Those 5 words pierced me like a razor sharp stiletto blade. I really didn't feel it at first, then a sharp pain rose in my heart as I knew something had died along with the first openly humanist musician in the world.

That pain simmered for 23 years. I would try to write a song about my sense of loss but it always seemed too sappy or contrived.

Finally, I wrote an apology to him.

It was the best I could do.

2. Excellent
I really liked your song. I am a songwriter too and, like you, could never figure out what to say in a song. I think if I ever did it would be close to what you said in yours.

I can't believe it has been 29 years. That next day at school a few of us altered our minds and hung out in the smoking lounge all day. It was such a surreal day.

3. That was a horrible night in my life.
I was 14, and just learning to love the Beatles.

I cried for two days.

4. Me too
I was 14 as well--found the Beatles in a roundabout way (through the show Beatlemania, of all things), became a complete Beatle freak, learned how to play the guitar so I could sing their songs, all of it. Ironically, only weeks before, I heard about Double Fantasy coming out and said to a friend, a fellow Beatles fan, "About time! I was wondering where John's been. It's like he died or something." x(

I will NEVER forget waking up to the clock radio playing "In My Life" and then the DJ saying "John Lennon, shot and killed last night..."

6. I heard about it while watching Monday Night Football also.
I remember when Howard had John in the booth for one game.

I was 26 at the time and at that point in my life people like John Lennon were going to live at least as long as I did. It brought my mortality home.

7. I too
was watching the football game and was shocked when Cosell made the announcement. The longer he's gone the more I realize how talented he was.

8. David Bowie's tribute to Lennon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IftjxN_KJoM

I was born in the mid 80s but understand the pain of losing an icon. I lived in The Rio Grande Valley(the Southern most part of Texas sharing a border with Mexico) and was crushed when Selena was shot and killed right as she was about to make it.Although she was from Corpus she was adopted as one of our own. The entire 5 county region went into mourning. I wore several tribute Selena Tees to school

I dont think I will be able to grasp how much he meant to my moms generation . He must have been a beautiful person

I grew up in McAllen & taught in La Joya....cute Selena story...a friend gave me a draft of a test he was writing for the periodic table, so I came up with stupid answers for all of them.....I remember writing "Selenium y los Dinos" as the answer for SE. Never heard a science teacher laugh so hard in my life. :P

9. I didn't hear about it until the next morning.
I was driving to work and they played a song from his new album. Afterward, the DJ said mourning John Lennon. I thought her was being a critic. Once at work, a colleague told me what happened.

10. My grandmother called me that night at college to express her sorrow.
She didn't care for rock music, and I was shocked she even knew who he was.

12. Wish my story was focused on my reaction to John Lennon dying
Edited on Tue Dec-08-09 08:00 PM by WolverineDG
but as I first heard the news as I came home from work, I heard my parents' reaction & they were actually cheering. I think seeing that side of them shocked me more than John Lennon getting shot. It wasn't until the next day in school that I was able to actually cry over the loss of John Lennon.

13. I was a toddler
But john lennon changed my uncles life, he was his idol. he was so upset my mom had him over and we decorated the tree.

My bro, a little older than me, went to school and said we all cried last night because my uncle's best friend died.
