I don't normally venture too far into the Lounge but I have a couple of questions |
|
1 - Anybody know a good book on the life of Alexander the Great? I'm reading a political novel by Steve Berry, "The Venetian Betrayal" and the whole plot line lies on the actions and the death of Alexander the Great. Fascinating reading but would like to read more about this man.
2 - Does anyone know if the Rosetta Stone language programs really work for the truly language learning impaired? I have had several unsuccessful attempts to learn a new language - French, Spanish and Chinese (don't ask). I need just 12 hours of foreign languages to finish my BA but have a real tin ear no matter how much I study, practice, use study groups, tutor, etc. I am reasonably smart (3.9 gpa), work really hard, but this is kicking my butt. If I thought there was a chance I could actually learn (bucket list item besides a degree requirement) I'd hit up eBay or try to find a cheap used copy of a language to work on.
I have been laid off since last March and the jobs are truly scarce. I've applied for every jobs listing posted except for "Helicopter Training Instructor" (government) and "Backup Killer" (chicken farm - wasn't interested in the "Deboning" position either)and I am afraid I might have to revise my resume and go for those. Anyway, after hitting the job sites, cold calling, networking, submitting applications and resumes, writing thank you letters, etc. I still have some time on my hands. Just thought I could be a little more productive with my days and try to at least keep busy. And I hate to have anything that I can't master. Bugs the heck out of me. (I can't sing either but I have learned to live with that lost cause - my family thanks me.)

1. Try Livemocha for language |
|
Heard good things about it and my wife found it pretty useful prior to going to Italy, plus it's free.
