I've got a John Lennon story...
Regarding the death of John Lennon, I have a story that is rather interesting. I did not witness this, but every person that was present swears this is true.

When I was a freshman at SUNY Fredonia, there was a group of sophomore guys who had the photos of the Beatles from the White Album on their walls. In all the rooms, the photo of John Lennon was upside down. I asked one of the guys about it, and he told me that on Dec. 8, 1980 a group of guys were watching Monday Night Football in a dorm room. The photos from the White Album were on the wall, and the photo of John Lennon kept falling down. The photo was finally stuck to the wall upside down, and it stayed. About fifteen minutes later, it came over the television that John Lennon had been shot and killed.

I know it is just coincidence, but this story gives me chills every time I think about it.

3. Wow.
The day after his murder, I came into school and they told us about John Lennon and had us singing his "War is Over" song. This is what happens when you go to a private, non-parochial school in San Francisco.

And, actually, back then, I actually didn't know he was a part of the Beatles (I was 9) and I only knew McCartney from Wings (yes, that Billy Crystal riff about his daughter was not that far-fetched).

Although I didn't know about him being in the Beatles, I did know his "(Just Like) Starting Over" song and really liked it and in fact, it was getting lots of airplay by then.

In addition to being a terrific musician, he strived to be a moral person, to live out and defend his values. That such a person is murdered makes me more weary about this world and much more convinced of the concept of "original sin".

4. I have a weird John Lennon story too
Before he died he had a large spread in Life magazine, shown living at the Dakota, baking bread, taking care of Sean, etc. About a month before he was shot I was having these nightmares about being at the Dakota, and seeing a man with a gun just lurking around. These dreams were so disturbing and real like-that I told my husband about these dreams. This was around the time Mark Chapman really was lurking around. When we heard of John's death both my husband and I were so freaked out.

That is quite a story...I cannot even imagine how that must have felt.

6. I Swear to God
That night around the time he died I was in my apartment in Chelsea thinking about how so many of the creative people of the 60s and 70s had fallen by the wayside. I had never quite liked either John nor Yoko but it flashed through my mind anyway, "Well, at least John is still around to stir things up." I heard the news the next morning.

7. I don't think it's coincidence
But then again, I don't believe there's any such thing as coincidence at all.

I always felt bad for saying, in the weeks after Double Fantasy was released and before John was murdered, "Where has he been? I thought he was dead!" Ugh. x(

Wild story--thanks for sharing, Driver8. Hey man, evil storm heading for the old 'hood--rain, sleet, snow, high winds. Miss WNY at all? ;)

8. I always watched Monday Night Football
but for some reason I went to bed around 10 that night. I turned on the radio and they were playing (Just like) Starting Over-I hadn't heard it before and I was almost in tears because it was so good to hear John'a voice after so long. Just as the song was ending I heard the phone ring and my roomate picked it up in the kitchen-it was her brother calling with the news about John's murder-and she yelled down the hall for me to wake up. I stayed up until 3am and everyone at work the next morning had red eyes from crying.

Time hasn't dulled the pain.
